Inductotherm has been a proponent of safe foundry practices. What does the company do to promote safety awareness in the metalcasting industry?

In the 1980s we launched a safety program that ensures

a safety kit is shipped with each piece of equipment our customers purchase. We also make the kit available to schools, casting organizations and all foundries, whether they have Inductotherm equipment or not. Tis safety kit has undergone seven revisions and is available in virtually every language used in countries for which we build equipment. It includes a video and literature and is also online on most of our websites. We offer training with new equipment and refresher

training courses every year, either at our local facilities or onsite. Workers can take online tests after they view the video and read the manual to see if they understand what was taught. Anything we can do for safety is offered as our way of giving back to the industry.

What basic ways foundries can improve their safety? Foundries need to assess hazard zones in order to identify

hazards and establish a plan of action for each hazard, including appropriate personal protective equipment usage and maintenance. Part of our training reminds customers that safety is their responsibility, not just the equipment manufacturers’. It is a shared responsibility between foundry workers who must acknowledge the risks associated with their specific job and make safer decisions along with owners and supervisors who also play a key role in selecting safer and more automated equipment.

How has Inductotherm improved foundry safety with its equipment?

Recently, we embarked on moving the foundry worker

from the melt deck to the safer environment of a control room. Te result was the ARMS System. All worker tasks are performed from a control room that’s air conditioned, keeping people off the melt deck, away from the hazards. Tat’s our best contribution to safety to date. We already have five of these systems running in foundries around the world. Hazards due to molten metal aren’t limited to high-

volume or low-volume production. Te ARMS System is applicable to any facility, and size is not a constraint. Over the last 25 years, we have automated charging,

pouring and now the melt deck, where the molten metal is produced. Preparing, melting and dispensing metal are now all automated for the highest productivity and safety possible. It takes any new technology time for the market to accept

it. In the early 1990s, we introduced a close capture hood system for fume extraction, and today virtually all furnaces ship with it. It takes time, but eventually the market accepts it as the norm. Being environmentally conscious, efficiency and safety all go hand-in-hand. ■

Inductotherm

成果就是ARMS(自动熔炼工厂)。 ■
