Small and medium-sized enterprises suffer par-
ticularly because there is little left at the bottom line to invest in modern production facilities and research. That’s enormously important for us because our prod- uct quality and innovative production methods are what distinguish our facilities worldwide. This is only possible because our skilled workers and engineers are continu- ously refining and developing procedures. We produce at the highest level, and not only in large amounts, as is often the case in low-wage countries.
Besides energy-saving and globalization, what are the other challenges diecasters have to face?
Eder: We must not forget the people. Our skilled
workers, metallurgical engineers and PhD graduates are our greatest asset. It has to stay that way. For more than 100 years, the casting industry in Germany has been a leader in casting technology, metal development and smelting technology. Training in our sector goes beyond what is required. We have the best training centers and higher education institutions. Preserving these and kindling young people’s interest in these professions is a challenge we are happy to face. A further challenge is ineffective government lobbying.
We need to show more confidence and speak more loudly about our matters in public. We have made tentative begin- nings, through the trade organizations and regional politi- cians. Tis has to be continued. ■ To receive this digital magazine in the future, go to

Globalization has not spared diecast parts. Production is carried out abroad at consid- erably lower prices.
