702 Institute, China Shipbuilding Industry Corp. Set Titanium Casting Records

Shuangrui Precision Titanium Casting Co., owned by the 702 Institute, which is affiliated with the China Shipbuilding Industry Corp., Beijing, China, produced a large cast titanium main frame for an aerospace project on Nov. 30, 2011. Te casting set records for being the heaviest, largest, thinnest and most complicated titanium casting produced in China. It was reported the casting was designed by Chinese

Aerospace Science & Technology Corp. Shuangrui Precision Titanium won the order due to its unique and large equip- ment, machining precision, high technology and production capability. A special team was formed at the company for the development of the product. Te team improved the design, performed specimen tests, and made breakthroughs in design, patternmaking, precision and dimensional control, among other areas. Te innovative patternmaking and melting and pouring parameters were required to produce the 400-metric ton casting with walls as thin as several millimeters. ■

Dongfeng-Nissan Plant in Zhengzhou, China, to Increase Need for Aluminum Castings

Carmaker Nissan recently established the Dongfeng Nis- san Zhengzhou Engine Plant in the Zhengzhou Economic Development Zone of China. When the plant is finished, its production capacity will be 450,000 cars, which will drive the need of aluminum castings. Dongfeng Nissan currently produces engines for its Chinese

products in Huadu, Guangzhou. Te expansion of Dongfeng Nissan into Zhengzhou will help it achieve its goal of more than 1.3 million units and become a top-three Chinese auto- motive company by 2015. It is estimated the facility will need more than 4,000 metric tons of aluminum components. Some aluminum recycling companies are planning to construct facili- ties in Zhengzhou to supply material to Dongfeng Nissan. ■
