Drink to success
The demand for good coffee continues to help boost sales of coffee makers in a hot beverage market now worth nearly £60 million.
Beverage makers and juicers has been a category showing consistent growth over recent years and while there were some excellent sales performances during 2010, there were also a few surprises.
The total hot beverage makers sector (including various hot drinks maker formats) has leaped an amazing 23.8% in value terms to £59.8 million. Volume shows a more modest rise – at 2.3% and 854,565 units – and the majority of growth came in the autumn and run-up to the Christmas period. An increase in the average price, by 21% to £70.03, has been responsible for pushing these sales. Within coffee makers, espresso continues its rise in fortunes – up 31.6% in value to £39.6 million and 18.1% in volume to 338,169 units. Filter coffee makers are ahead in volume (nearly 454,000 and down 7.3%) but are worth less than half in value (approximately £17.8 million). Kettles continue to gain near total household domination, and is a sector now worth over £172 million, almost as much as men’s shavers at £176 million. The biggest surprise really is juicers – up slightly in value to £6.63 million on the back of a 21% rise in average price to £40, but resulting in a drop in volume sales (16.5%) to 165,731 units.
