both starting to creep into the consumer press and hailed as the new trendsetting styles to look for.
Freestanding cookers
There was some good news on the freestanding front, with sales of electric cookers up 0.1% in volume and 4.7% in value, thanks largely to a unit price increase of 4.6% to £468 against £448 the previous year.
Freestanding gas cookers suffered badly with an 11.1% decline in volume and 4.3% decline in value, even though the unit price rose 7.6% to £392. Dual fuel also fared badly with a 3.9% decline in volume and 3.5% fall in value, with unit prices dropping 0.4% to £1,103.
Microwaves
As consumers looked for quick and easy solutions to their cooking needs, microwaves became more high tech with manufacturers launching a wave of combination models, some with steam functions.
The biggest increase was in the built-in microwave only market, which saw a 32% increase in volume and 22.5% rise in value, even though prices dropped 7.2% to £322 per unit.
