That said, LED’s price premium has experienced massive erosion, and was down a whopping 33% on the previous year’s figure, where it was
comfortably above the £1,000-mark. LED TV sales grew by 427%, albeit from a small base to 747,000 pieces, meaning that 9% of LCD sales are for LED products. LED TV value grew by 253% to £572 million. There is little sign of LCD’s dominance of this market ending on the near to medium future, although plasma sales have nibbled into LCD’s market share.
Plasma
Plasma sales grew by a healthy 15.1% to 876,000 pieces, and value was up 1.8% to £597 million. Average price fell 11.5% to £682. Plasma accounts for 9% of the TV market by volume and 14% by value, and sales have been helped by the trend towards larger screen sizes – plasma offers the best value in terms of screen inches per pound. Also, the arrival of 3DTV has helped boost plasma sales, as some manufacturers believe that this technology is the best for active 3DTV systems.
HDTV
HD Ready and Full HD sets now account for 99% of the TV market by volume and 98% by value. HDTV sales have been boosted by increasing HD content, with Freesat and
