Cooking with confidence
Though volume sales were down slightly, the market value was up, which is encouraging news for the year ahead.
Looking at the figures for year-on-year percentage change from January to December 2009 against the same period for 2010, it’s clear that certain sectors of the cooking market are outperforming others – namely electric single ovens and induction hobs – and these are trends that are likely to continue into 2011 and beyond. Overall, the cooking market’s volume was down 1.5% with value up 4.2%. This was largely due to a price increase of 5.7% per unit with an average price of £409 against £387 the previous year.
As a whole, built-in/under is doing well, with a 2.9% rise in volume and 9.1% rise in value. Freestanding is suffering slightly in volume sales, however, with a 4.4% decline, though it has risen 1.4% in value.
Built-in ovens
A complete contrast to sales from the previous year, figures for 2010 show that built-in ovens have significantly outperformed freestanding cooking. Built-in electric single ovens saw the biggest increase with a 7.3% rise in volume and 16.2% rise in value, with an average price increase of 8.3% to £296 against £274 the previous year. Built-in gas single ovens have declined in popularity, as consumers move away from single gas oven cooking. These saw a 12% decline in volume and 13.8% decrease in value with unit prices dropping 2% to £418.
