Chill factor

The cooling market held some surprises in 2010, including a decline in sbs models.

The refrigeration market is clearly on the way up from the recessionary dip as the overall volume of sales increased by 3% to 2,140 thousand units, with value posting even better growth of 4.4% reaching £662 million. At the same time the average price of refrigeration products increased by 1.4% to £309. The built-in sector performed particularly well in 2010, with the volume of sales growing by 3.6% and value shooting by 7.5%, driven by the average price increase of 3.7% (£395).

Even freestanding appliances showed a positive growth; 2.9% in sales volume and 4% in value, with the average price increasing by 1%.

Manufacturers continued to develop and launch new technologies with advanced food

preserving features such as humidity controlled compartments, 3D Cooling and Multi Air Flow, all of which are designed to keep food fresher for longer. The message that consumers can save money in the long term by investing in a state-of-the-art appliance appears not to have made its mark quite yet.
