such as BD Live (which offers web content), hard disk storage, USB playback, Wi-Fi functionality, home networking, media streaming, and compatibility with the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standard. High definition content can also be accessed from broadcast sources via built-in a Freeview HD and Freesat tuner, and some Blu-ray products also offer BBC iPlayer functionality. The arrival of 3DTV has also helped boost Blu-ray sales, as it is the only home video format currently offering this feature.

Blu-ray faces competition from hard disk PVRs as a home recording format, but a growing number of Blu-ray models combine PVR functionality for short-term recording with Blu-ray recording for archiving content. A bigger challenge is the rise of viewing video content online and web-based movie services, some of which now offer high definition video. But online services rely on fast, reliable broadband connections and many homes lack this facility. And the bandwidth required for 3D content currently makes it unviable for online distribution. ■
