in association with GfK Bigger and more sophisticated

Sales of washing machines and tumble dryers were up for 2010, which is great news for the independent retailer.

Traditionally a replacement market, home laundry took a much-needed upturn last year, with both volume and value up overall. Washing machines were up 4.4% in volume, 5.8% in value, with prices up 1.3% to £321 per unit. Tumble dryers also gave good results, with volume up 4.8% and value up 9.2%, with an average unit price of £225, up 4.2% on the previous year.

Freestanding or built-in

Consumers prefer having a freestanding washing machine that can be replaced or repaired more easily than a built-in model. This, coupled with the new generation of luxury looking finishes and designs, produced strong sales for 2010. Overall, freestanding washing machines were up 4.9% in volume, 6.3% in value, with an average unit price of £315, up 1.3% on the previous year. Built-in washers didn’t fare so well with a 6% drop in volume and 1.8% decline in value with an average unit price of £472, 4.5% up from the previous year.

Washer dryers

Predominantly used in the contract market or for single households in a small apartment, washer dryers are a great space saver as they enable you to wash and dry without needing two appliances to do the job. However, as the contract market has slowed down in recent years, this has been reflected in sales as washer dryers were down in both freestanding and built-in volume, with an 8.6% drop in freestanding and 9.1% drop in built-in. Value was also down 2.9% in freestanding and -3.7% in built-in.

Larger loads

Consumers like having the option of washing larger loads less often, thus
