l GER Michael Smith and his wife, Sandra, traveled to Springfield, ILLINOIS, as guests of the Springfield Lodge and the Illinois Elks Association. Following a dinner at the Springfield Lodge, the first couple dove into two days of meetings, with a short break to visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. While in Illinois, the GER and first lady also pitched in with the Illinois Elks as they packed 700 boxes of supplies to be sent to US troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and attended a luncheon to honor the state’s eight Lady Volunteers of the Year, including Connie Blackorby, of the Jerseyville Lodge, who was named the overall Lady Volunteer of the Year. Last but not least, while the GER and the first lady were in Illinois, they learned about the Illinois Elks Association’s Easter Bunny Program, which sends the Easter Bunny to visit thousands of young people and senior citizens each year. Pictured presenting Florida Gators gift bags filled with Gators stickers and stuffed Easter Bunny dolls to the first couple is PDD David Culbertson of the DeKalb Lodge.
