On Tour with Michael F. Smith


u GER Michael Smith and his wife, Sandra, visited Birmingham, ALABAMA, where they were guests of the Alabama Elks Association for its midyear conference. Before the conference started, the first couple visited the University of Alabama’s athletic facility, including the Paul W. Bryant Museum, which commemorates the career of legendary Alabama coach Paul W. “Bear” Bryant. The morning after a day of meetings, a formal banquet, and a dance, the first couple moved on to the Cullman Lodge, where they participated in the institution of the new Marshall County Lodge. l GER Michael Smith and his wife, Sandra, visited Pasadena, CALIFORNIA, as guests of the California- Hawaii Elks Association and the Pasadena Lodge. During their visit, the first couple were treated to a sneak preview of the floats for the Tournament of Roses Parade, a day at the races at Santa Anita Park, where they congratulated the winner of a race that was dedicated to the Elks of the Pasadena Lodge, and a gala New Year’s Eve Ball at the Pasadena Lodge. On New Year’s Day, the first couple rose at 5:00 a.m. to get a head start on the Tournament of Roses Parade, and after the parade, they watched the Rose Bowl football game. u GER Michael Smith and his wife, Sandra, traveled to the FLORIDA Elks Youth Camp, one of the two state major projects, to attend the quarterly meeting of the Florida State Elks Association. During their visit, the first couple toured 25 cabins that were being newly built so that 33 percent more campers can take advantage of the camp’s 385 acres and the opportunities for social, mental, and physical growth the

camp offers. The first couple also heard the report of the other state major project, Florida Elks Children’s Therapy Services, which employs 20 therapists who provide in-home therapy to children with special needs who would otherwise not be able to afford such help. After the conclusion of the formal meetings, the GER and first lady judged a Barbecue Cook-Off at the Eustis Lodge, and the following morning, they traveled to the Sanford Lodge to help celebrate that lodge’s 100th anniversary.
