A Dedicated Staff Holley is talking about people like Blanche Spinner, who is number one in employee seniority and has worked on the housekeeping staff for forty- seven years. “I’m from Bedford,” Spinner says, “but I didn’t come to the Home when I was a little girl to look at any Christmas lights. There weren’t any then.” In addition to cleaning every inch of the single and double bedrooms, bathrooms, and porches in one of the buildings, Blanche is also responsible for cleaning all the guest rooms for visiting dignitaries and board of trustee members.
The food service department has its
share of dedicated employees as well, including women like Betty Parker, who has been working in the kitchen and dining room for more than forty years. Bessie Johnson and her sister Eileen Skinner have been with the Elks National Home for many years as well. Eileen, with thirty-nine years of service as a waitress here, remembers a damaging kitchen fire that took place years ago. “For a few weeks, the

HEN it comes to accommodations at the Elks National Home, residents have a variety of living styles to chose from, ranging from single rooms with a shared bath to two-bedroom, two-bath apartments with living rooms, kitchens, and dens. Whether residents choose room-based residential living or apartment living options, all housing at the Elks National Home requires a one-time occupancy fee followed by a monthly service fee that covers all utilities (except cable TV and telephone) and provides amenities such as free parking in a lighted lot, twenty-four-hour security, and either one or three meals per day. (Residential accommodations, which do not have kitchens, include three meals per day, while apartment living options include one meal per day.) Each type of accommodation provides residents with twenty-four-hour emergency call systems.
