Executive Secretary Nellie Martin, of the Bedford, Virginia, Lodge, has worked at the Elks National Home for nearly four decades and has assisted every director of the Home since 1973 with a myriad of administrative tasks, including speaking with hundreds of people on the phone about how one goes about becoming a resident of the Elks National Home. Nellie also edits the Home’s quarterly newsletter, prepares various reports for internal and external use, and handles state regulation files. “I think many employees here are advocates for the Home in their personal lives,” she says. “Several members of my Sunday school class have lived here. I enjoy telling them about the Home when they ask. When I retire, I’m planning to live here.” Maybe someday Deanna Slaughter, of the Bedford, Virginia, Lodge, who
