GET FIT WITH MEL B
Former pop star Mel B headlines Black Bean’s first efforts on Kinect. James Batchelor finds out how the publisher plans to Spice up the fitness genre
JUST AS celebs can shift bucketloads of workout videos, Black Bean stands to rake it in with its latest fitness game: Get Fit with Mel B. As the title suggests, the game is hosted by the pop star formerly known as Scary Spice, who coaches players through comprehensive fitness programs and offers feedback on their progress. Much like other fitness titles on
Kinect, Get Fituses Microsoft’s new device to track gamers’ bodies and limbs as they exercise for a more precise fitness gaming experience. There are over 200 tailored exercises to try out, spread across six types of aerobic discipline, which include cardio, advanced cardio, step, pump, dance fit and tone and combat. These can be accessed through pre-set fitness regimes, or players can create their own.

The game also focuses on the nutritional side of keeping healthy, with six different meal plans available to demonstrate the sort of things users should be eating. There are even 140 recipes to help them get started. As with the exercise routines, players can customise their own diets.
Mel B is present throughout the whole package, and the game’s UK distributor Tradewest believes this will be key to the game’s success. “Get Fit with Mel Bis the only title that allows you to train alongside a star and get her feedback,” says Tradewest’s head of PR Phil Robinson. “As Mel B is a brand ambassador of Fitness First, the game benefits both from the expertise of the fitness chain and from Mel’s popularity. This represents a quality certification for anyone looking for credible results.”
