Entertainment booms as Alworths eyes 150 stores

‘New Woolworths’ says it will have 19 shops by Christmas as entertainment sales rise by Christopher Dring

GAMING has become a major part of Alworths' plans, as the firm eyes 150 new stores over the next three years.

Alworths was founded last year and at the time the retailer had no intentions of going big on entertainment. But that changed during the 2010, with music, DVD and games accounting for 13 per cent of the firm's business. “I would forecast that that 13 per cent will go up quite considerably over the next few months,” Alworths MD Andy Latham told MCV.

but we have learnt that people come in to Alworths expecting entertainment.” The company currently operates 14 stores, but hopes to have 19 up and running by Christmas. “We are still looking to open a considerable number of stores next year,” added Latham. “I believe there is an opportunity on the British High Street to open 150- odd stores.

A NEW consumer show aimed at youngsters and families is expected to pull in 50,000 visitors, and games will play a major role. The Young People’s Fringe festival kicks off next year on the weekend of June 18th and June 19th at Alexandra Palace, London. Consumers will be able to play together on 22 game pods. There will also be a stage full of 3D and motion games, as well as an NSPCC casual gaming area.

There will also be a beach party, electric bike races and street dancing. On top of this, a ‘games bus’ will travel across London over an eight-week period. Festival director Adrienne Montes of organiser Flying Pig said: “There is a gap in the market for festivals where casual, hardcore and family gamers can play. “For sponsors this offers added value, offering global branding options to reach the tech savvy youth market.” Fringe: 07931 313 010
