BRAND PROFILE: NEED FOR SPEED

Criterion’s creative director Craig Sullivan

NFS: Most Wanted November 2005

A dramatic return to form and easily the most impressive 360 launch title, with a return to the Hot Pursuit style that the hardcore had been pining for.

NFS: Pro Street November 2007

A more realistic focus for this iteration, but was roundly panned for a poor handling model and the

complete absence of police.

NFS: Undercover November 2008

Stung by the reaction to Pro Street, Undercovertook the series back to its roots, but its

unchallenging nature ensured another critical mauling.

NFS: Shift September 2009

Developed by London-based

Slightly Mad studios, realism was the watchword of this compelling return to form, and a sequel is already in the works.

NFS: World July 2010

A free-to-play MMO- game modelled on the gameplay style and map design of Most Wantedand NFS: Carbon. 1m players have registered in the first three months.

drifting around a bend at 200mph and being able to throw off the cops with a quick 180. This, coupled with the fact that we wanted the cars to feel more authentic, meant that we needed a new handling system. So we started from scratch and iterated all the way.

As for online numbers, we’ll have to wait and see, but there aren’t many driving games around that offer simple fun online.

Craig Sullivan, Criterion

Can you foresee Hot Pursuit breaking new ground in terms of online popularity? We play all the big games online at the moment, and it’s something the whole studio is interested in. Hot Pursuitis obviously a perfect game for online because the roles are so clear and understandable to a wide audience; the Racers race and the Cops chase. Because of this, I think the online element of the game is going to be played by a lot of people because they already know the rules. As for online numbers, we’ll have to wait and see, but there aren’t that many driving games around that support simple fun online, so I’d expect us to do pretty well from that.

NFS: Hot Pursuit November 2010

Long-time Burnout starlets Criterion turns its considerable talent to

reinvigorating the 1998 classic – with predictably stunning success.
