DJ HERO 2 HITS THE DECKS

Activision was up to its usual partying standards at the DJ Hero 2launch. There were appearances from Meg Matthews, Sarah Harding and Sara Barron (left); Mark Ronson handled the tunes (right); Preston of Big Brother fame (above)even turned up. NEWS Two new shows – one trade and one consumer – emerge to battle with CMP’s long-standing ECTS event. London EventCo announces plans to host public exhibition Game Stars Live, targeting 100,000 consumers, at ExCeL. The organiser has also been invited by ELSPA to run a trade expo, EGN. All three events go ahead the following September – and ultimately kill off the concept of a UK games trade show… Argos becomes an unofficial distributor as indies flock to snap up stock of PS2 titles which the catalogue giant has slashed to under £30… A mini survey of industry execs reveals 71 per cent don’t believe mobile gaming will ever outperform traditional gaming. iPhone, of course, hadn’t emerged just yet.

AND FINALLY

More scientific evidence of the beneficial aspect of video games emerges. Apparently playing games can be good for curing certain phobias. A study in Quebec has found that PC games which include specially constructed environments were just as effective at stimulating phobic responses as simulation machines that cost four times as much. The researchers used Half-Lifeto create a spider-laden evironment for arachnophobes and tight spaces for claustrophobics.
