KINGDOM QUEST ONE of the highlights of LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre Manchester


is the Kingdom Quest thrill ride. Managed by Belgian theming giant 3DBA, development of the interactive dark ride involved extensive collaboration with both operator Merlin Entertainments and individual manufacturers. The seven rooms in Kingdom Quest contain 65 physical targets integrated into


the scenery and hundreds more targets on the numerous video screens. Guests on the ride use a large Lego-inspired gun to shoot the targets as their cart travels along the track. Points are granted in a range between 100 up to 4,500 so people playing again


and again can try to beat their own - or their friend’s - score. Alterface provided the show control, shooting system, guns, score tracking,


projection system and audio players, physical targets, lights and special effects for the ride. Speaking in the wake of the LDC opening, Oliver Vincent, Alterface content and communications manager, said: “The technology is very flexible and provides well integrated targets along with intuitive gameplay.” While Merlin maintained the title of artistic director, project managers Roger

Houben - who founded 3DBA in 2003 - and his colleague Wiebe Damstra brought together a range of companies to create the ultimate interactive dark ride designed for pre-teens. “The attraction has over 300 targets which is more than four times the number


of targets a traditional interactive dark ride has,” Houben said. “The budget is, however, in the same range. “The Lego team at Merlin were looking for a more repeatable and interactive


experience, whereby guests are encouraged to repeat the attraction over and over again as there are many targets to hit. Furthermore, Lego wanted to have a more direct response between the action and the result of the shooting, which is much easier to achieve on a screen with media.” Looking ahead, Houben said 3BDA would keep focusing at new and fresh


attractions and concepts. He noted: “In the near future you will see a further roll out of the interactive dark ride at several venues - we have several contracts already concluded. We will also keep focusing on media-based attractions like the 4D theatre and the 4D dark ride.”
