ENERGISE YOUR BUSINESS IN SOMERSET T

here is no doubt about the importance of energy to the county that is currently

hosting Europe’s largest construction project, Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, and energy is being generated across the whole of Somerset as it opens up new opportunities in a range of sectors. With a tradition for growing and making things, a reputation for innovation and enterprise, great connections and a skilled workforce, Somerset is home to world-class companies as well as scores of small business success stories from those who have chosen to combine excellent quality of life with creativity and productivity. Hinkley Point C is already providing work for almost 3000 people on the site in West Somerset and attracting an increasing number of businesses to join the vast supply chain or offer a raft of related services. For companies starting out, there are a number of Somerset Enterprise Centres with affordable, flexible tenures and the Somerset Energy Innovation Centre, a hub for businesses in the low carbon and nuclear energy sectors.

256-hectare site outside Bridgwater once housed a munitions factory and now forms part of the multi-location Heart of the South West Enterprise Zone. It will be focussed round a low-carbon energy generation facility that will power the rest of the Energy Park, presently known as Huntspill, with its manufacturing, logistics and other industries. There is more land available at Bridgwater Gateway, a business park development just off J24 of the M5 and the well-established Isleport Business Park at J22.

As well as EDF Energy, West Somerset has a number of other well-known businesses including Shearwell Data, Singer Instruments, D H Miles and DESO Engineering. A National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Coastline are the reasons why so many visitors choose this part of the County. Close to the M5 and Hinkley Point, Sedgemoor is set to open up one of the most strategically important land parcels in the UK, also for energy related use. The

The County Town, Taunton was awarded Garden Town status recently, the first in the South West with this designation. Developing the right environment for business – both existing and new – is an important strand of plans for Taunton’s future. There will be a range of opportunities too at the new Nexus 25 strategic employment site at J25 of the M5 and the Firepool mixed-use development on the edge of the town centre. In Mendip, the Bath and West Enterprise Area, provides more than 40 hectares of development land near Shepton Mallet, with easy access to Bristol, Bath and the M4 corridor. A designated Food Enterprise Zone, part of the site offers simplified planning options and financial incentives for eligible companies.

A Rural Enterprise Centre will be opening in January, with innovation advice and guidance, conference facilities and commercial workspace. Street Business Park is a green field site opposite the international distribution HQ for Clarks Shoes, which is bringing a manufacturing line back to the UK for the first time since 2006, and close to Clarks Village, which attracts 4.3 million visitors annually. South Somerset is at the heart of aerospace and advanced manufacturing research and design in the County, and one of the key nodes for the South West aerospace cluster. Yeovil is home to globally leading aerospace companies including Leonardo, Honeywell, Thales, Tods Aerospace and BAE Systems, and is supported by an aerospace supply chain of

some 200 businesses. The area has extensive sites for employment use including Hort Bridge at Ilminster; Lufton 2000, a Business Park on the western side of Yeovil and a mixed employment site of six hectares known as Seafire Park. Working together, the County Council, Mendip, Sedgemoor, South Somerset, Taunton Deane and West Somerset are eager to assist companies wishing to take advantage of the superb sites available in this spacious yet well connected county where prices are lower than in the South East or neighbouring Bristol and Bath.
