SUBARU LEVORG AND OUTBACK I
n this issue we review the driver’s AWD tourer, the Subaru Levorg. The first thing we were struck by was the very well- appointed and technology advanced passenger cabin. The Levorg is equipped as standard with the Subaru Starlink System, through which you can easily access weather, music and news via the navigation system. It has excellent Voice Recognition which allows you to speak commands directly to your iPhone or the car. There’s also a very handy rear-view camera, allowing you to reverse and park easily and safely. But of course, it’s out on the open road that the Levorg really excels. Its firmly established Boxer engine has pistons which move horizontally, giving a great sense of balance and stability to the car, there’s less vibration and as the engine weight can sit lower, the vehicle handles better. The AWD system delivers power to individual wheels, helping to create the best possible grip and delivering torque confidently and smoothly. The Levorg combines Sports Tourer comfort and handling with real driving fun, gliding along on the motorway and the CVT gearbox facilitates easy manoeuvring in tight, urban environments. Long journeys shouldn’t be arduous. We took our Subaru Levorg 1.6 petrol GT Lineartrionic model down to Climping, stretching its legs on the M23, testing the road-holding and balance on the windy and occasionally bumpy A24. We skipped the busier coastal attractions (your Littlehampton doesn’t always satisfy) and parked up at one of our favourite seaside spots, resting in the sport-style heated leather seats which provide armchair-like comfort, before enjoying the crisp, sequential 6-gear paddle shifter on the steering wheel on the way home. We recommend you get to know the Levorg a little better, as we did.

Next up, we focus on Outback, another fabulous Subaru vehicle which can literally handle anything. Whether it’s wet fields, streams, rough or icy tracks the symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and X-Mode with Hill Descent Control maintain the best possible grip to let you negotiate the most challenging driving terrain. Thanks to the low centre of gravity there’s a tremendous sense of stability and handling, and as with the Levorg above, Subaru’s legendary Boxer engine powers the car with a smooth
but assertive power. We enjoyed many technical and innovative features in the passenger cabin, especially Subaru’s intelligent EyeSight driving support system, which practically watches the road with you, detecting the risk of a collision and providing audible warnings. EyeSight can even apply the brakes. The Outback is a big, capable car but it’s also highly fuel-efficient, returning up to 50.4 mpg in the Combined cycle. It’s powerful too, capable of towing up to 2000 kg, and there are excellent features to prevent that common feeling of under understeer when pulling loads. The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) has sensors that automatically fine-tune power and braking to keep things stable. But even with all this power and torque, Subaru are playing their full part in using technology and design to create cars which are increasingly kinder to the environment. Emissions on the Outback are as low as 145g CO2, which also minimises annual Vehicle Excise Duty. And built into the Subaru Outback from the start is passenger safety, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating, which signifies outstanding real-world crash protection.
