ast growing Italian restaurant chain Tony Macaroni has signed a deal to become the latest tenant at the prestigious Marischal Square city centre regeneration development in Aberdeen. The Tony Macaroni formula of authentic Italian cooking at affordable prices is already a huge success in 12 locations across Scotland including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dunfermline, Dundee and East Kilbride and the new restaurant will be the company’s second in the Granite City. Tony Macaroni will join Costa, All Bar One, Prezzo, Marriott International and iconic north-east businesses Aberdeen Journals and Mackie’s at Marischal Square in a move likely to create 40 new jobs at the restaurant/bar/offices complex. Fit-out work on the new 4,460 sq.ft restaurant has started. It will feature a state-of-the-art Marana Forni wood fired pizza oven and seat up to 155 diners, including a private dining area. Marischal Square is being delivered by urban regeneration specialists Muse Developments, working with site landowner Aberdeen City Council with Aviva Investors providing the project funding.

Aberdeen City Council’s City Centre Masterplan lead, Councillor Marie Boulton, welcomed the addition of the Tony Macaroni business to Marischal Square, with the deal meaning that five of the seven bar/restaurant spaces on site are now occupied. Councillor Boulton added: “It’s great that a company which is
very well established in Edinburgh and Glasgow is coming to Marischal Square.
“Marischal Square is one of the developments which is aimed at revitalising the east end of Union Street as part of the City Centre Masterplan Project and I’m pleased that Toni Macaroni has recognised this by siting a new restaurant in this quarter.” The new restaurant will sit alongside the impressive ‘Poised’ sculpture by internationally renowned artist, Andy Scott.

he former John Watson & Company print works at Kyle Street, just north of
Glasgow city centre, is to be re-developed as student accommodation and office space following its sale by DM Hall, one of Scotland’s leading independent firms of chartered surveyors, to developers, Watkin Jones, a recognised leader in student accommodation developments. The planned development at Kyle,
Calgary and Stafford Streets, which will comprise student accommodation of around 300 bedrooms, ancillary accommodation, amenity space and parking. The site is 0.85 acre and sits a short distance from Buchanan Street Bus Station. It is also in close proximity to the campuses of Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde universities. The site became available as a result of the sale of John Watson & Company to Multi-Colour Corporation, which is head quartered in Ohio, USA, and its subsequent move to a new build Centre of Excellence in Clydebank. John Watson OBE, former owner of the business, said: “It please me greatly that the site will be re-born as student accommodation serving what will be the next generation of educated business people.”
