This has resulted in 7,500 direct FTE jobs with an additional 2,000 indirect jobs supported by the industry. Turnover in this sector has grown 13% in the five years 2011-2016, and spend on accommodation has increased by a substantial 37.5% - certifying the quality of accommodation and the appeal of the region. Last year alone, tourist visitor spend in Ayrshire was £356m with accommodation and food and drink accounting for more than half of this. The scenic coastal location also provides unique opportunities for the area’s harbours and ports, particularly in marine activities, tourism, and business linked to marina infrastructure.
With tourism passenger numbers using the Ardrossan to Arran ferry service expected to exceed one million on the introduction of a new ferry vessel in winter 2018/19, Team North Ayrshire is working in partnership with the port operator to maximise the opportunities that lay ahead. Currently, there are development opportunities in leisure, tourism and residential which will complement the significant public investment in the regeneration of Ardrossan. Another key coastal regeneration project sits at Irvine Harbourside and adjacent Ardeer Peninsula. The vision is to connect the two areas, build world-class cultural and leisure facilities and create hundreds of new houses. The plans are of

national scale and importance and could potentially be the largest regeneration project in the West of Scotland. Reflecting the strengths and opportunities that these key sectors bring to the Ayrshire economy, the three Ayrshire local authorities have developed a regional bid, known as the Ayrshire Growth Deal, which aims to act as a powerful catalyst for transformation in Ayrshire, building on the strengths of the region.

A successful bid will form the basis of a long-term economic and investment strategy that will transform both public and private sector efforts to regenerate the region.
