Council with the assistance of Welsh Government funding as part of a concerted land assembly exercise to pump prime The Kingsway’s regeneration. The project will transform The Kingsway and surrounding areas with new employment and footfall opportunities.


The former nightclub’s demolition is currently underway and scheduled for completion in the Spring and will pave the way for the construction of a new City Digital Village office development on site. The City Digital Village project will take advantage of its prime location adjacent to the transatlantic ‘Jupiter’ cable to access the benefits of superfast broadband to facilitate the growth of higher value activities such as tech businesses, and will act as a key driver for the regional economy. There is significant unsatisfied demand within the city centre from this strongly growing sector and interest has already been expressed from companies and educational sectors in locating to the scheme.


The 100,000 sq.ft development will focus on the creation of low cost flexible offices within a high quality and vibrant commercial environment to house start-up, graduates and grow-on companies with high speed broadband suitable for Tech


‘start up’ companies emerging from the higher education sector and act as a ‘growth-pole’ for the Swansea City Bay Region.


The project will be a stimulus for private sector investment in The Kingsway. It will enable tech


companies to start up, innovate, grow, and to remain in Swansea, maximising their long term benefit to the


industries. Technology accelerator space will be created for ICT and professional service companies to innovate, develop and grow their services. The Digital Village will provide growth space for indigenous innovative technology businesses and new


city and wider region. The Digital Village will expand over time to create a modern, fit for purpose employment base, a Central Business District, a key objective of the Council’s policy document, the Swansea Central Area Regeneration Framework. A new pedestrian link from The Kingsway to Oxford Street will create a high quality seamless transition space through the development site, accommodating various movement patterns and creating places for users to sit and engage with the space whilst providing a direct connection to the City’s bus station. The Kingsway itself will be transformed into a high quality place providing those living and working there with landscaped green open spaces, and better pedestrian and cycling links between the City’s bus and rail stations. Both these significant regeneration projects will be delivered with the benefit of both public and private funding from a number of sources including the Council, Welsh Government and ERDF funds. A further significant financial contribution could also be forthcoming from the UK Government’s Swansea Bay City Region City Deal bid which is currently being assessed. If successful, investment worth more than £500m to Swansea Bay over the next 20 years will be used to focus on developing the region into a digital superhub though major investment in digital infrastructure.


The 'Internet Coast' City Deal proposals would have major benefits for Swansea and neighbouring authorities Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, helping transform the region into a connected internet coast region recognised internationally for its emerging knowledge and innovation economy. The proposals would support around 39,000 jobs over the next 20 years when spin-offs, relocations, construction jobs and business opportunities for local suppliers are taken into account, generating billions of pounds of economic output and attract major private sector investment.

ST DAVID’S DEVELOPMENT SITE TO BE TRANSFORMED S


wansea Council and its development manager, Rivington Land, are aiming


to transform the St David’s development site in the city centre. Known as Swansea Central, the scheme is one of a number of major developments that are set to revitalise the whole city in the next few years.


The Swansea Central scheme will see an indoor arena, car park and hotel constructed on the south side of Oystermouth Road – the LC car park site. Shops, restaurants, residential units, educational or office facilities and a boutique cinema will be built on the city centre side – the site of the former St David’s shopping centre.

The 3,500-capacity arena will come first – with a broad pedestrian, covered bridge joining the sites and enhancing the city centre’s links with its highly attractive waterfront. The development already has outline planning permission, and a further application for the detailed design of the first phase is due to be submitted early in the spring.


One of the leading global


entertainment organisations, Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), has been selected to operate the arena, and it plans to host around 200 major events each year.


Among the final design options for


both the arena and the bridge is an eye- catching digital 'skin' incorporating state- of-the-art LED lighting that would be able to project still and moving images to promote upcoming shows, concerts and other events.


These digital skins could potentially


be powered entirely by solar panels incorporated into the roof of the arena, which would allow both facilities to be renewable energy powered attractions. Work on the first phase of Swansea


Central – the construction of the indoor arena, the bridge, a new hotel and additional car parking – is expected to start later next year, with the arena set to be open and fully operational in 2020.
