Breaking free from the corporate rat race After working in the corporate world for nearly 20 years, Alan Smith started craving a change. He wanted to ditch the 9-to-5 routine and spend more time with his family. This led the Scotsman to take the leap into owning his own business and, in April 2014, he set up his ActionCOACH franchise in Edinburgh.
Life before franchising, and why ActionCOACH appealed to Alan… Alan earned a degree in economics and management, propelling him into a variety of roles at PepsiCo, Cadbury

and Mondelez International. Yet the desire to go it alone persisted. To fulfil his curiosity, Alan participated in an event focusing on establishing his own business. Initially, he contemplated going into the food retail sector, leveraging his industry experience but nothing struck a chord. Despite this, one brand managed to captivate him – the event’s sponsors, ActionCOACH. Alan had been no stranger to business coaching in
