DELI SALES PACKAGED LUNCHMEAT — MEAT DEPARTMENT
Packaged lunchmeat sold within the meat department generated $558.9 million in July sales, declining 2.8% in dollars and 6.4% in pounds versus year ago despite the benefit of Fourth of July consumption occasions. Declines remained considerably steeper than those seen in aisle deli meat, which posted only a 0.1% dollar decline and a 2.0% reduction in pounds. The performance gap suggests consumers continue to favor fresh and prepared deli offerings over packaged alternatives.
