Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) is hoping to receive approval from the government to issue a tender for a single duty free arrivals shop at Seoul Gimpo International Airport, later this year. KAC would ideally like to conduct the
process before the end of this year, however it is still in negotiations with several parties. Gimpo is just one of numerous arrivals duty free shops that KAC hopes to open in regional airports across South Korea from 2020 onwards. KAC is responsible for awarding the concessions. In line with government policy on airport
duty free arrivals shops, bidding for Gimpo’s mixed category arrivals shop licence would be restricted to SME companies.

mind and said that Gimpo Airport might be able to open an arrivals shop earlier. We are, therefore, seeking approval for a single 200sq m arrivals shop.” “Hopefully we could have an arrivals
shop in Gimpo as early as the end of this year. KAC is preparing to make a plan how to issue a tender for arrivals
TFWA calls for industry to back its associations
TFWA President Alain Maingreaud has issued a renewed plea to organisations within the DF&TR industry to get behind their trade associations in order to protect the channel’s unique trading advantages. “We’re blessed in our industry with high-
quality trade associations,” he says. “We really need the industry to support
these associations because they do a very important job and can only do it if the stakeholders get behind them. “Once again, we need support from all
the different sectors to defend ourselves better against the challenges we are facing.” The ability of the Duty Free World Council
to facilitate communication between various industry stakeholders, must not
be underestimated, adds Maingreaud. “Communication is certainly easier and it’s all thanks to the DFWC, which Erik and I worked very hard to set up.” Asked by TRBusiness for his personal
goal in the next year or so, Maingreaud, says: “I want all industry stakeholders to talk to each other and work together as much as possible.”
Asian millennials prefer to plan their purchases
The vast majority, about 90% of AsPac travellers who end up making a purchase in duty free, planned to do so before making their trip, says Swiss research firm m1nd- set. This is especially true of millennials. “However, the majority arrive at the
duty free shop without having made up their mind about which products to buy specifically… they only have a general idea about the category, the mission or the budget,” reveals m1nd-set. “This opens up huge possibilities to
engage with undecided shoppers inside the store. “Therefore, make sure your products
stand out on the shelves, introduce in-store elements (e.g. gondolas and digital touch points) to ensure that their uniqueness/exclusivity /value are highly visible in order to make them most likely to be chosen.” Around half of travellers from the Asia
Pacific region (53%) visit duty free shops and among them the vast majority end up purchasing something (81%).
