Maingreaud admits that he is trying to give his predecessor a well- earned break. “I know I can pick up the phone
if I need him,” Maingreaud says. “The nice thing about Erik is that he doesn’t like to impose his views or himself on anyone. “He knows he is always welcome
at any event we ever organise and that he will always be a guest of honour wherever we go.” Lifting the lid on this relationship
with Rimmer and other members of the TFWA team, Maingreaud comments: “John and myself have known each other for a long time and worked together for many years. We have frequent and open communication. “The Management Committee
is extremely supportive and very hands-on. Its input and guidance are key to the general running of our various events. “We need its recommendations
and thoughts on many things as the members are part of the business.” TRBusiness is sure the MC played a
key part in deciding to host the 2019 MEADFA Conference in Muscat (24- 26 November).
MEADFA preparation The 18th MEADFA Conference, managed by TFWA and hosted by Muscat Duty Free, provides a key educational and networking opportunity for those who already – or are looking to – do business in the region. Maingreaud says: “I think it’s fair

about the launch of the TFWA Innovation Lab which replaces the TFWA Digital Village. This new concept will provide
exhibitors with the opportunity to showcase new ideas and fresh thinking to an audience of duty free and travel professionals. It will run from Tuesday 1 October until Friday 4 October alongside the TFWA World Exhibition and Conference. “This is not only a change in name,
but a change in format in the sense we are opening this new village to a larger range of companies. These companies are not purely digital and offer services linked to this field.” There will also be a new venue for
the TFWA Innovation Lab, according to Maingreaud. “This will be located in a dedicated tented exhibition area facing the Majestic Beach.” The TFWA World Exhibition
will no doubt provide another opportunity for Maingreaud to meet representatives from the various industry trade associations. He comments: “We’re blessed
in our industry with high-quality trade associations, whether it’s the European Travel Retail Confederation or Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association. “We really need the industry to
support these associations because they do a very important job and can only do it if the stakeholders get behind them.” Trade associations have a major
role to play in helping the industry going forward. “Once again, we

need support from all the different sectors to defend ourselves better against the challenges we are facing.” The ability of the Duty Free
World Council to facilitate communication between various industry stakeholders, must not be underestimated. “Communication is certainly easier and it’s all thanks to the Duty Free World Council, which Erik and I worked very hard to set up,” adds Maingreaud. Asked by TRBusiness what his
personal goals will be in the next year or so, Maingreaud says: “I want all industry stakeholders to talk to each other and work together as much as possible.” «
“We value the relationships we have with IAADFS and ASUTIL. From the discussions we’ve had, they are very positive. It’s in the industry’s interest to have a strong event.”
