LEADING ASIA PACIFIC OPERATORS: DFS GROUP

Gallerias in Cambodia and Italy also enjoyed rapid growth. What LVMH omitted from

its report was the ongoing saga between DFS and Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport Authority (GIAA). At the end of January this year Guam Airport announced that it had lodged a notice of appeal with the Guam Supreme Court after the Guam Superior Court upheld an earlier arbitration award to DFS Group. A statement issued by GIAA

confirming the appeal is the latest in a long-running legal dispute between the parties linked variously to the award of a 10-year concession to Lotte Guam in 2013. This particular appeal centres

on GIAA’s claims that DFS owes approximately $2.1m in back rent and damages for a section of the retail space that the retailer occupied before Lotte Duty Free took the concession over in 2013.

Singapore renewal Unfazed by its dealings with Guam Airport, DFS is seemingly keen to continue consolidating and expanding its presence at other Asian hub airports. DFS Venture Singapore (Pte) Limited was successful in securing retail space at Singapore Changi Airport in December last year, following Changi Airport Group’s (CAG) highly publicised tender for 11 luxury leases. DFS was awarded the largest lots at

Concession K (Burberry; 135sq m) and at the conjoined Concessions I (123 sq m) and J (124sq m) for Gucci. Earlier that month, DFS announced

that it had also extended its revered liquor concessions at the airport for a further two years, beginning in 2020. As well as its stores at Changi

Airport, DFS operates shops at Singapore Cruise Centre’s Tanah Merah and Harbourfront terminals. But with CAG specifically, DFS has

managed to cement a meaningful long-term business partnership; one that Brooke Supernaw, DFS Group Senior Vice President Spirits, Wines, Tobacco, Food and Gifts attests to on p55. TRBusiness has been kept abreast

of numerous large-scale brand partnerships, events and launches that have taken place there in recent months, including one with Hennessy, Dewar’s Double Double whisky, The Macallan and Crème de la Mer. Outside of Singapore, DFS has

launched new exclusive collections with many brands at its stores in Macau, a popular destination for luxury goods shoppers. Just prior to beginning the new

year in 2019, DFS celebrated its 10th Masters of Time (and jewellery) event, with a collection of more than 450 watch and jewellery pieces. On 7-8 December, DFS hosted its ‘largest and most spectacular’ Masters of Time Exhibition in partnership with Shoppes at Four Seasons, Macau.

DFS progressed strongly in 2018 thanks to particularly good performances in Hong Kong and Macau. Recently opened Gallerias in Cambodia and Italy also enjoyed rapid growth.

Almost 200 Guests were treated to a multi-sensory dinner boasting five Michelin-starred cuisine courtesy of Chef Raf Alajmo, accompanied by a performance at the Venetian Theatre that guided guests on digital journey of taste, sight, travel and discovery. Pieces from the ‘Masters of

Time X’ collection were then made available for purchase at DFS Group’s T Galleria store at the Shoppes at Four Seasons, Macau until 28 February 2019. «

DFS draws over 1,000 to eighth Masters of Wines & Spirits

DFS Group’s eighth Masters of Wines and Spirits event held in Singapore in

partnership with Changi Airport Group (CAG) attracted over 1,000 local and international guests on 23-24 March and the collection will now be available for purchase at the airport itself. DFS pulled together a collection of

140 of the rarest and finest whiskies, wines, cognacs and champagne from around the world for the event hosted at Singapore’s state-of-the-art complex, Infinite Studios. Guests were invited on an ‘immersive

Whiskey Room. MAY 2019

and interactive journey’ to discover each of the brands through ‘engaging video art installations’ and digital projections and an exploration of a wide variety of unique tasting experiences, says DFS.

As previously reported, this year’s edition of Masters of Wines and Spirits explored the theme of ‘Masters at Work’ – a homage to those who have acquired complete knowledge or skill in a subject, technique or artform. During the weekend, DFS celebrated

six masters across a spectrum of backgrounds including Brooke Supernaw of DFS as Master of Curation; Ewan Gunn of Diageo as Master of Whisky; Sarah Burgess of The Macallan as Master of Malt; Fabrice Papin of Château Lafite Rothschild as Master of Wine; Hidetsugu Ueno of Bar High Five as Master of Cocktails; and DJ Arthur Bray as Master of Music.
