The integration of Bancs and Quartz was part of a strong message related to Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Ward summed up the integration route: the core Bancs system was being retained but the capital markets/treasury functionality would be replaced over time by Quartz. Ultimately, the plan was for a single Customer Information File (CIF) and real-time updating between the two halves of the offering. Other TCS software would be incorporated, including anti-money laundering and corporate actions systems. The intention, said Ward, was to offer a full universal banking system. At the same time, Bancs and Quartz would still be offered as separate solutions. By this stage FNS had already done work to detach the Bancs CIF as a first step in its SOA strategy. FNS was committed to moving towards an SOA future, in particular within its Bancs project at National Bank of Kuwait, where there was a strong desire during the evaluation stage for such an approach. By this stage, according to FNS’s TCS-derived COO, R Krishnan, around 420 functions within Bancs had been exposed as services within an XML layer.


Quartz was also moving along this route, with this


somewhat easier due to the C++ and Java nature of this newer system. Ward pointed out at the same time that, while Bancs was still centred on a Cobol core, over 40 per cent of the functionality was now written in C or Java. Around 100 TCS staff had been allocated to the Bancs team, with 30 of these in FNS’s home of Australia and the rest in India. Backed by this significant investment, TCS would move as far down the SOA route as possible, said Ward, with adoption of FIX standards where these existed. The first deliverable was scheduled for mid-2006. Initial support would be for Microsoft’s Biztalk, followed by the likes of Websphere, Weblogic and Tibco. A second phase would see what Ward described as a


move from the ‘coarse grained’ exposure of the first phase to a more granular exposure. Activities such as fees and charges calculations would be decoupled from the systems. TCS also wanted to change the Cobol core of Bancs but it was felt at this stage that this might cause some performance problems in some existing large customers. He said TCS was talking to a number of other extremely large banks, even one or two that were larger than SBI (Bank of China was known to be in the frame at that time). ‘We have to be very careful and pragmatic.’ In terms of customers taking the integrated Bancs/Quartz


offering, no one had signed at this time but the combined solution was apparently on shortlists at five banks. Ward said these banks were sufficiently far advanced with their selections that they had looked at the combined system proposal and none had expressed any nervousness. He did not believe that existing users of Bancs would look to move to Quartz in the short-term – he pointed out that only ANZ was a heavy user of the treasury functionality.


Today, at the server level, Bancs runs on the IBM zSeries, Unix, Windows and Linux. Current client platforms and Windows and iPad. There is a full graphical user interface or browser-based presentation layer based on Java JSP and Struts framework. Method of holding data is DB2, UDB, Oracle, or SQL Server. Languages are Java, .Net, MF Cobol supported by TCS Bancs development kit. In the second half of 2009, TCSFS announced a full Java- based version as a result of its redevelopment and integration of Bancs and Quartz. The Cobol back-end had been reworked, it said, and the Java version would be offered alongside the existing version. Some banks were not concerned about the Cobol back- end of Bancs, said Subramaniam, but for others it was a problem, particularly where they were being advised in their selections by third party consultants. The new version includes a combined CIF: Quartz had contributed the functionality for investment banking, payments and limits; Bancs had provided the core engine for retail transaction processing, plus card management. The supplier had used a code generator to convert the Cobol code to Java. The issue of security, which goes hand in hand with such conversions, was being adequately addressed to avoid the pitfalls, said Ian Pitt, head of research, development and technology at the supplier. The translation of the existing Bancs core functionality to Java had been done using the business capabilities of the banking platform and the vendor’s own ‘model driven architecture’ tools. ‘This is quite different from straight language translators that exist on the market because the new environment is generated from the business definitions and requirements,’ explained Pitt. ‘This allowed TCS to bypass the classic issues of forcing a procedural language into an object-oriented language.’ Thanks to the toolset that ‘generates consistent, already tuned code’ TCSFS claimed to have avoided the problems some other vendors have suffered with similar projects. While its target market was likely to be tier two and below, it might also appeal to tier one banks for universal banking, said Subramaniam, and ‘architecturally, we are confident it will succeed even for high volumes’. TCSFS had carried out internal benchmarks which showed the system handling 20 million accounts, he said, and would qualify this with official tests.


Some parts of the Java solution were being used by City Union Bank in India, said Subramaniam. It was also being bid at a Middle Eastern bank which he believed would sign shortly, and it would also be rolled out in a number of banks in India, including a local subsidiary of Sri Lanka’s Bank of Ceylon. The latter had been a long-standing user of the version of Quartz that was sold for treasury, but the new roll-out would be across the bank’s entire
