As the way forward, the aim was to move more and more
back office processing into Aperio. Hamilton cited exceptions management and collateral management as processes which would be extracted from the back office and would reside within the middle layer. The same would happen with business logic within channel applications, with these ‘collapsed’ into standard processes. For ICBS/CBS, in 2005/6 the Aperio architecture was being used to come up with Business Apps. Sales of ICBS at that time comprised four layers made up of the shrinking ICBS core engine, CBS Communicator, the Business Process Engine layer, and the ICBS Business Apps. The business process management layer of Aperio has a library of objects with this linked to the Aperio presentation layer or to third party applications (Countrywide retained its internet banking solution so this is interfaced to Aperio). Also promised was added functionality via partnerships, with this reflected in Fiserv incorporating dealer management portfolio functionality and, from Cohen Brown Management Group, B2B and B2C sales models. The evolution ran through 2006 and 2007. Fiserv set about extending the Customer Information File of ICBS to turn it into an ‘enterprise customer hub’ which can incorporate third party data. That hub could potentially be marketed as a solution in its own right, with Fiserv planning to do this during 2006. ‘Everything will be taken out of the core that shouldn’t be there,’ said Hamilton. For instance, in the future Fiserv did not want any reports to be coded in RPG or in any other language. The core would shrink to a kernel and would finally be rewritten. He felt this was a more appropriate way of evolution than just moving an RPG-based system to Java, with this merely producing ‘procedural Java’ and retaining all of the traditional problems. For the branch solution, Aperio also has a role to play, alongside Alliant Branch Teller (or CBS Teller as it was now branded). The traditional platform is still offered as the ‘account-centric, high volume’ teller solution. Aperio is the solution for sales, advice and open plan branches. In the middle, in the ‘teller/seller’ space, where bank staff are involved in some sales activities, there is a fusion of the two solutions, with Communicator providing services to the CBS Teller user through the Aperio user interface. Fiserv also launched a Teller Seller solution that, as the name suggests, provides teller and sales capabilities. For the data warehouse, Fiserv had an Oracle offering but this has been moved to IBM UDM so that it can run on the iSeries and mainframe, with delivery to a first CBS user, South Financial Group, in the fourth quarter of 2005. The ICBS version shipped at the same time. This is for operational and analytical reporting and constitutes part of the core CBS/ICBS offering. Fiserv also planned to pre-package integration with CBS/ICBS via Aperio for its IPS-Sendero suite for credit and market risk, budgeting and forecasting. It was also working on business performance and measurement models for financial services for incorporation into the data warehouse offering.

In terms of product sales, Fiserv continued to perform
well through 2006, with a good year in the US and a number of upgrades, including a three-year licence renewal by Millennium bcp. Its new wins included the Ministry of Housing in Trinidad, Coop Desarrollo, the sixth largest credit union in Mexico, and CL Permanent Building Society, a de novo institution in Trinidad which went live with ICBS and CBS Teller and CRS systems in less than four months. Also in Mexico was a win at Banco Ahorro Famsa, the new
banking unit of one of Mexico’s largest furniture and appliance retailers, Grupo Famsa S.A de C.V. The bank selected ICBS and Fiserv’s credit card system to process its private label and franchised credit cards in-house. Fiserv also provided the bank with treasury, anti-money laundering and risk management functionality. Further evidence of Fiserv’s international push was seen in 2006, when it opened offices in Moscow and Mexico City, as a result of interest from banks and non-traditional players in both regions wanting to start up banking and consumer finance businesses. Keane stated: ‘We are seeing a lot of interest from banks who want to adopt western/US business models and are looking to Fiserv to help them launch consumer finance and retail banking operations as we did in the past in Poland and other CEE countries.’ The combination of Aperio and ICBS gained further
ground in Mexico in May 2007, when Fiserv announced that Banco Facil, the new banking unit of Sherman Financial Group, a leading US financial company, and Grupo Comercial Chedraui, a large Mexican retailer, had selected ICBS as its core banking system and Fiserv Aperio for BPM and CRM. Banco Facil’s branches are located inside stores throughout Mexico and in other locations outside Grupo Comercial Chedraui. The bank was looking to offer a wide range of products and services through multiple delivery channels via Fiserv Aperio. ICBS was expected to improve back office efficiencies, processing one million accounts and supporting more than 100 branches. Fiserv also provided the bank with treasury, securities administration, anti-money laundering and internet banking functionalities. Another signing in 2007 included Fiserv Aperio. This was Bank of South Pacific in Papua New Guinea, the country’s largest retail bank with over $683 million in assets. Alongside Aperio, it took three other Fiserv solutions to address its front- to-back business needs: CBS Data Warehouse, the Nautilus enterprise content management solution and CBS Teller. One twist came at ICBS user, Raiffeisen, which decided to
adopt another of its installed iSeries-based systems, Misys’ Midas, to support its push into consumer finance in Russia and elsewhere, resulting in a plan to upgrade ten or so sites to MidasPlus and work with Misys to incorporate consumer finance from Equation into MidasPlus. While the project did not go as planned (resulting in the selection of Infosys’ Finacle for Russia and other larger retail operations), the decision was somewhat galling for Fiserv, as it had hoped to be selected.
