enterprise market risk solution for trading, labelled Misys Risk. ‘We are committed to ensuring that all of our customers’ investment in the combined entity’s products is protected, so product roadmaps will remain intact for the forseeable future,’ said Tom Kilroy, Misys’ acting CEO, in a letter to customers. At the start of June, Vista revealed the joint entity would be called Misys, with the Turaz brand disappearing after just four months in existence. The new Misys would have 1800 clients worldwide and claimed it would ‘provide the largest and most comprehensive suite of capital markets and banking solutions in the industry’. Of these 1800 clients, only around 100 overlapped in their use of both Turaz and Misys systems, providing abundant cross-selling opportunities, according to the vendor. Turaz CEO, Bret Bolin, who had moved from another Vista


company, became CEO; another Vista man, Nadeem Syed, became president and COO. Meanwhile, Kilroy became general counsel of the combined entity and Stephen Wilson was to continue as CFO, as well as becoming executive vice president. There were also now two extended leadership teams, one comprising top executives from the old Misys and the other one from Turaz. ‘Nobody of the top management from either company has left,’ stated Bolin. As for the people on the ground, no details on workforce consolidation and possible lay-offs were forthcoming. In terms of the multiple systems now in Misys’ portfolio,


there was a review of the products and their positioning, said Bolin. ‘Over the last two months, we have been defining the market plans, identifying where each product creates value.’ There would be a clear, defined roadmap for each product and Misys’ customers would be provided with this information, said Bolin. No systems were expected to be shelved, but there would be an integration effort for adjacent solutions, both for existing clients and to bring to market broader offerings. Although there was, on the surface, some overlap between some systems, ‘once you look under the cover’ differences in their strengths, capabilities and areas of focus become apparent, said Syed. As for Bankfusion, Bolin stated that there were no plans to dispose of it. ‘We are very excited about Bankfusion and we are committed to it,’ he said. A new version of Bankfusion was due to ship in the Summer.


However, for all the claims of broad functionality, Misys had declined to bid during 2011 at some banks, including in the UK and Central Europe. In spite of this, at the end of the year, the vendor still claimed that its new version of Bankfusion would enable it to offer more functionality in all areas across its entire product suite (hence including other Misys offerings too) than Temenos’ T24. These claims stemmed from a ‘feature to feature’ study completed by its partner, HCL. An interim Bankfusion release was also scheduled for December 2011, which would include initial Islamic banking support (mudarabah and ijarah - profit sharing and leasing, respectively), with other Shari’ah instruments set to follow


in 2012. Also promised were enhancements around lending and CRM (a 360 degree view promised), plus regional market requirements.


By this stage, Misys’ development, professional services, customer support and solution consulting resources for Bankfusion were put at 843 staff, which represented a significant ramp-up, in part from cutting the teams for Equation, Midas and Bankmaster. The long-promised new teller component was also belatedly due for release in December 2011, with Habib Bank in Pakistan and Bank Al- Jazira signing for this. A new loan origination component was also taken by another Bankfusion Equation client, Philippine Veterans Bank, with this to go live in the latter half of 2012. In terms of sales as a whole during 2011, Misys had a mere


four rather low-end new-name deals for Bankfusion Universal Banking. One of the deals came from Scotiabank in Jamaica. There was also one new-name deal for Bankfusion Midas. There was good news from Ethiopia in the first half of 2012 as Awash International Bank opted to remain with Misys and become another to move from Bankmaster to Bankfusion. National Bank of Ethiopia (the country’s central bank and regulator) now became the only remaining Bankmaster user in the country although this was known to be also seeking a new solution. Previous Bankmaster users in Ethiopia, Construction and Business Bank as well as Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, had both opted for Temenos’ T24 in 2010. In fact, Awash was one of only two Bankfusion Universal Banking deals in 2012, the other coming in Iraq.


On the positive side, National Bank of Kenya went live with Bankfusion Universal Banking, following its selection the previous year versus Oracle FSS, Temenos, Infosys and FIS. ‘So far, the project has gone on well,’ said Kenneth Sirima, head of information and communications technology at the bank in March 2012. ‘Deliverables have been on time with slight budget variations where new business requirements emerged in the course of the implementation.’ For Bankfusion Midas, Banco Finantia, a private bank and investment manager in Portugal, succeeded where Caixa BI had not, in upgrading from Midas, on time and on budget in Q1 of 2013. A few more banks opted for the Bankfusion upgrade path in 2013. These included AB Bank and IFIC in Bangladesh (both chose to replace Equation with Bankfusion Equation) and ABSA Bank in South Africa, which decided to move from Midas to Bankfusion Midas. Also in 2013, Tanzania’s CRDB extended its use of Bankfusion to its operations in Burundi. In Germany, Maple Bank became a new Bankfusion taker, having abandoned its Temenos T24 roll-out. The bank was also one of the first takers of Misys’ new offering in the TCM space, Global Back Office (the processing component the Capital Markets Fusion platform, with Summit at the centre). The Candian bank was one of, again, only two new-name deals for Bankfusion Universal Banking in the year, the other being in Indonesia.
