ANTI-POLLUTION 63
the pandemic. European ingredient manufacturer, CLR Berlin conducted a roundtable discussion about the impact of the pandemic: “Strong use of sanitisers leads to increased demand of products like hand creams due to strong damage of skin barrier and skin microbiota, so actives which bring a protective functionality with them will be important,” said John Lofthouse, Director Global Sales & Marketing at CLR Berlin, as part of this roundtable discussion. A good example of a product taking this
concept forward and combining biocidal and caring efficacy in one product is Pure Touch (Creightons) brand Moisturising Hand Cream, which the manufacturers say is the first hand cream to be manufactured that kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses. By virtue of being a cream it moisturises and nourishes, and: “provides effective and lasting protection between uses against bacteria and viruses”. In addition, Creightons say that due to the formulation being ethanol-free, and therefore perfect for an extended COVID-19 environment, the moisturising cream does not have the drying effects on the skin, nor the immediate-only effectiveness against
bacteria and viruses, which are both typical characteristics of conventional alcohol- based hand sanitisers. On top of the mechanical and chemical
damage caused by the rigorous sanitising, we should not forget the impact of stress during this historical period of our lives. With everything turned upside down for many months, stress will have built up to high levels in people who will not have experienced it before. This can manifest in many ways, and a reduction of skin health is a very common problem caused by stress. To counter this, the much-publicised
growth in products that offer a “spa at home” experience early in the pandemic could well be in for a longer moment in the spotlight. We are still
at a relatively early stage of beginning to fully understand the processes involved in decreasing
stress as a result of applying cosmetic products. This is an important time to
find out more on this subject because we are experiencing a period of massively reduced human contact.
Conclusion As our knowledge of the world around us and the impact of industrialised processes
increases, the list of things we consider to be detrimental will increase too. As soon as there is a recognised impact on skin health, there will be demand for skin care companies to offer protection in the form of topical products. How the future of skin care and beauty
develops into the longer post-pandemic future remains to be seen, and perhaps relies upon the success of the various vaccination programmes that at the time of writing are ongoing. How quickly and to what degree social restrictions are lifted will have a huge bearing on this industry. The ripple effect is almost incalculably vast – for instance, there are already some people who suggest such viruses emerge because of the ever-increasing encroachment of people into cleared rainforests, which will undoubtedly boost the number of consumers wanting to ensure their products are sourced in a sustainable manner.
