SKIN CARE 43
nutrition, health, wellness and intimacy. The key product for skin is Rose Platinum which contains pigments to instantly even skin tone and boost radiance and LHA to boost cell renewal and reduce excess pigmentation. In a recent joint publication including scientists from Vichy a quality of life (QOL) questionnaire was developed to specifically investigate the effects of menopause on female subjects with a view to using the responses to inform and educate healthcare providers. 1,287 French women aged 18 to 75 years were provided with the 22 question questionnaire, of which 37% declared they were menopaused (coded MPW in the study) and 63% declared they were still having menstrual periods (coded NMPW in the study). Of the MPW group 8% were receiving hormonotherapy, 6% were using nutritional supplements and 2% dermocosmetics with 28% declaring they were taking more care of their skin since menopause. Fourteen significant differences between the two groups were found, indicating what the key changes during menopause are. These were increased facial hairiness, imperfections of the skin surface, skin dryness, loss of skin elasticity, pigmentation spots, skin thinning, acne onset or relapse, wrinkles, onset of rosacea, weight gain, more sensitive skin,
more irritated skin, more fragile skin and the fact that haemotomas occurred more quickly and more frequently. 72% of MPW group reported that menopause significantly affected their skin and 50% reported they were insufficiently informed.
Conclusion With the growing size of the elderly population around the globe and the removal of social stigma around menopause which has stymied discussions about this key part of a females lifetime we are seeing the emergence of personal care products which focus on providing solutions for the specific issues encountered. The effects of menopause on the skin, caused in the main by the drop in oestrogen levels impacting collagen levels in the skin, are well documented. Skin care ranges should be encouraged to focus on providing products and advice to support people during a time where their quality of life may be lowered. The recently published research involving Vichy scientists gives further comprehensive details of the issues that skin will suffer from and the need for women to be informed of these changes in the perimenopause period if not earlier. I look forward to this sector of skin care being an area of growth and also an area where the personal care industry can step
up and offer support, expert advice and appropriate products throughout the process.
