This will include the use of multivariate techniques for the development of formula prototypes and the use of rheology to speed up the testing of such prototypes. For consumers to use products more

Further sessions on the chemistry of formulation will look into better skin penetration, phytochemistry, drug design techniques and neurocosmetics. Other speakers confirmed to deliver

Q&A with Shona Thomson
To discover more about this month’s Formulation Summit, we spoke to Shona Thomson, marketing manager, in- cosmetics Global & Formulation Summit, and discussed the features and content of this key diary date. Personal Care: The Formulation Summit has proved successful since it first started in 2016, do you think you will be able to retain the elements that have bought it success in a digital format? Shona Thomson: Although we can’t be together in person, our great online platform replicates the key elements of a live event so we are confident the Formulation Summit will continue to be successful in this new format. Just like the traditional event, there will be a main stage for in depth presentations and live Q&As with the speakers. The exhibitor area will facilitate networking so delegates can meet with suppliers to see the latest solutions in formulating in a climate change age. Delegates can also benefit from one-to-one video meetings as well as see live product demos. Plus, an added bonus that isn’t possible in the venue where the live conference is, we can now offer smaller, more in-depth round tables. With a range of topics including waste reduction/circular economy, green chemistry innovations and business challenges in adapting to sustainable practices, these will be moderated by our expert speakers and allow delegates to

have a more thorough discussion on the issues most prevalent to them. PC: This year you will be focusing on the science behind products that are good for the planet. Is there a sense that we need to avoid ‘greenwashing’? ST: Each year we follow the latest trend. Last year we discussed consumer driven trends and formulating for the conscious consumer, and this year will focus on climate change - a topic which has been around for years but is more important now than ever before. The summit doesn’t encourage formulators to market themselves as sustainable or make shortcuts, it’s about educating them on how they can make a genuine impact in protecting the planet through their products. The Summit will provide an educational platform for delegates to learn, develop and ultimately be proud they they’re helping to improve the environment around us. PC: There is always an opportunity for lively debates at Formulation Summits. Will attendees be able to interact with the presentations/presenters in this format? ST: Absolutely, there will be a lively Q&A with each of the speakers as well as at the panel discussions. The Summit is an open platform, and we encourage everyone to ask questions and join the debate. The speakers will be online for the event, so not only can delegates ask questions in each session, but they can also request meetings
with speakers to have a one-on-one conversation. One great thing about a digital format is delegates who are shy but have a burning question can submit it easily! We encourage all delegates to interact as much as possible. PC: There will also be exhibitor demonstrations on the final day. Can you tell us more about those? ST: At the live Summit, a number of exhibitors had table tops where they can demonstrate their expertise and we will continue to provide that in the new format through live video demos. As we’re unable to run live events, we’ve hosted a lot of virtual exhibitor demos this year which have been immensely popular. We look forward to seeing what solutions our exhibitors can provide for the delegates at the Formulation Summit 2020. PC: Is the Formulation Summit aimed at established formulators or is it also pitched at a level that newcomers would gain from the content? ST: The Formulation Summit is a high- level scientific conference specifically dedicated to formulators. From heads of R&D to junior chemists, there is always an opportunity to learn and develop. However, we would recommend that ideally delegates should be established formulators, as those new to formulating may find it slightly too advanced.
