In the more immediate future, Italian gambling requires an urgent government resolution on licensing concessions across all gambling verticals as 2021 extensions granted by Rome TAR Courts will end within the coming months. Alexander begins our interview by detailing the current situation with regards to these licences.
Currently, all concessions have been extended to June 30, 2022, as established by the post- lockdown regulations. Ministry of Finance Undersecretary, Federico Freni, announced that further technical extensions will come at the end of this period, pending the sector reform.
In general, we sustain the need to align the expiry date of all concessions, both retail and online, because it would be impossible to proceed with tenders without a reform of the entire sector. An alternative approach to perennial licences with an extensive tender procedure could be an annual license with an annual fee for approved operators by the regulator.
The future of the Italian gaming industry hinges on its sustainability - from the impact of the sector on the society to that on the economy and employment. How would you assess the job done by Italy's regulators to effectively communicate the objectives of its gaming regulation across consumer protection,
responsible gaming, and combating illegal activities to stakeholders?
We recognise the commitment of the Customs & Monopoly Agency (ADM) in considering the needs of the industry. We hope that the dialogue between the ADM and operators have undertaken some time ago will continue along this path. Te crucial points identified by ADM (consumer protection, responsible gaming and combating illegal activities) are in line with our mission, therefore we are always available to offer our contribution to the regulator.
A correct, constant, and transparent communication on legal and responsible gaming is a key activity against illegal gambling. With that purpose, we are thinking as a company to develop during 2022 a series of initiatives both internal and external, related to the dissemination of healthy and responsible gaming principles.

We hope that the work shared with the Agency will lead us to the right balance between the need to strengthen controls and a harmonisation of rules in the way of the regulation of concessions.
