SG:certified: sustainability needn’t be a burden
What's your background in the gaming industry?
I started working in the gambling industry in 2009 when I joined as an anti-fraud analyst whilst doing my MSc in psychology. Tis was meant to be a temporary job for me, but I was so intrigued with the cast of data that the operator had, and how this can be used to help customers. With my academic psychology background, combined with personal experience and working with affected others of addictions, I started looking into the concept of responsible gambling.
Tis led me to responsible gambling manager back in 2011 and from then on, I dedicated my life to working on harm minimisation and academic research on the topic. In my current role with SG:certified as a Safer Gambling Senior Consultant, I am working with a number of initiatives to minimise harm and assist in making safer gambling a reality.
How has the betting industry's stance towards sustainability evolved during this time?

I feel that there is still a long way to go. A lot of the initiatives around consumer protection is mostly driven by gambling regulations, but more operators are realising that the only way of having a sustainable business model is to protect and take care of their customers.
Gamblers and consumers are also getting more informed about the industry, and they do perceive one’s commitment to safer gambling as a motivating factor for them to choose the brand to gamble with. Despite this, there still needs to be a lot of work done in the area, as there are still several practices that are unethical or targeting problematic gamblers instead of assisting them.
