Narrow casting is important to the long-term success of any supplier that operates in multiple jurisdictions. While not every single game will have the lifespan of something like Book of Ra, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t create games that are targeted at a certain sub-section of players.
In a nutshell, what are 2023's slot trends?
Good question! Lower RTPs is the number one trend right now unfortunately. I also think suppliers will just continue to copy existing concepts that are working. Tere’s not so much happening right now, despite every supplier saying they’re innovating in some form.
Hold and Spin mechanics have been on the rise for the last couple of years and I don’t see this slowing down any time soon. Tey offer thrilling gameplay that can last a lot longer than your traditional free spins bonus can. I also think we are enjoying a renaissance in jackpot slots, especially in North America where jackpots are engrained in land-based casino culture.
I also think we’ll see more title with tumbling reels, linked jackpots, and different levels of buy bonuses. Whilst these aren’t new trends, I think they’ll all continue to be successful.
Have any new forms of gameplay, specific titles or emerging studios caught your attention recently?
In terms of gameplay, crash games have become quite successful in recent months, it’s certainly hard to ignore their current rise. In terms of companies, you often see people leave prominent roles a year or two after a big acquisition to start their own business. Tere are few people in the process of this right now, so I’m keeping a close eye on what they’re doing and what they come up with.
Finally, how do you see online slots industry evolving over the coming years?
Steadily. Tere are more suppliers out there than ever right now and that can only be a good thing in terms of evolution. Te last few years has shown that competition breeds innovation, and with the advancements in technology it can only get bigger and better.
I also believe we are readying for next-level gamification, as operators are increasingly shifting their focusing on retention. New features are needed to continue engaging and entertaining players. We’ll continue to see what happens with NFTs, I don’t think they’ll have much an impact on slots, but they certainly will for other games and the gaming industry as a whole.
