September, 2017 Visual Work Instructions are the GPS of Manufacturing Continued from page 66

sustaining innovation, establishing KPI (key per- formance indicator) analysis, scheduling varia- tions, and accommodating demands are only a few of the difficulties.

Scott Electronics implemented ERP and MRP platforms, but needed more. The company had to be able to enhance that software with a tool that would help collect data while displaying proce- dures visually.

There were multiple variations of building the same product. Control was difficult in such a con- text. Getting paper off the floor was a necessity. Since Scott Electronics turned into a visual factory with VKS, there is a much higher level of control and all employees do the same job the same way. Quality and efficiency have increased with standardized visual work instructions. VKS is equipped to meet a wide range of needs, including visual work instructions, smart forms and productivity monitoring tools. Due to the versatility of VKS, Scott Electronics has had an opportunity to apply the solution in a wide range of applications, such as auditing, machine maintenance, incoming inspection, in-process work instructions, and other areas. The company is transitioning to fully integrate VKS into every process within its factory.

With complete electronic data interchange (EDI) and barcode structure — employees’ badges and processes are barcode labeled — and a wide, flatscreen display that projects live KPIs, Scott Electronics is getting the best out of VKS’ applica- tion.

VKS can be tuned to meet a wide range of needs, including production, auditing, machine maintenance, inspection, and in- process work instructions.

As the company transitioned toward lean manufacturing, it needed to increase productivity, improve efficiency and lower costs. After establish- ing a higher-quality training program, Scott Electronics looked to VKS. VKS was the missing piece that the company needed to create its best practices and truly become a visual factory.

Getting Paper Off the Shop Floor

Before moving to digital documentation, there were many different prints on the shop floor with myriad verbiage and writing. Despite having the documentation, people were doing things in different ways, without a standardized system.

Besides reducing production variation and increasing efficiency, VKS has helped Scott Electronics identify both strengths and weakness- es within its processes. This insight has given Scott’s officers the right data to approach and improve operations in a strategic fashion. They’ve since been able to make informed decisions more

rapidly and for the greater benefit of the company. In addition to this, VKS has also helped Scott Electronics to increase throughput, helping to increase its overall capacity and effectiveness.

For Manufacturers by Manufacturers

Scott Electronics is an employee-centric organization. The company recognizes that its peo- ple that are the most important part of the compa- ny. By having VKS as a solution to better share its employees’ knowledge, it has helped pave the way to continuous improvement.

The company also gains customers by using VKS’ system. Due to the standardized processes, traceability, and the visual environment, its cus- tomers are delighted to work with a smart factory that represents Industry 4.0.

Visible throughout the factory, VKS displays work instructions and production data in real time.

Born from manufacturers’ experience, the VKS application was crafted, and still evolves in a manufacturing environment. VKS works hard to address actual problems that manufacturers face. By implementing visual work instructions, along with data gathering and analysis, Scott Electronics both offers more to its customers and gains an edge over the competition.
