(464m2) of production space, where the four SMT lines are located. However, the machines are not set up only for passive inspection. The facility will of- fer visitors demo boards produced on the spot, with each line focusing on a different segment of the market. The four SMT lines are carefully


designed to showcase the company’s ability to meet very different produc- tion requirements. The first line focus- es on speed and performance and con- tains a dual-gantry DECAN placement system along with an SM485, which is a single- gantry placement system, but one that can place a wide range of components. Another focuses on efficiency, with con- veyor modularity that allows single or dual conveyors to be used, without incurring the cost of a full dual-rail system. The next line contains


three of Hanwha’s SM series placement systems, combined to create a high-value solu- tion. In this case, high value means more options and flexi- bility, and not simply low- cost. The fourth line is set up for large-format board pro- duction and includes an ESE US-LX- 5 long-board screen printer, along with an SM-481 plus placement ma- chine.


At the core of Hanwha’s pick-


and-place technology is a placement verification system that checks the position of every component three times inside the machine before the board moves on. The goal is that the pick-and-place machines should nev- er have a problem if properly config- ured, perhaps even obviating the need for further AOI. Situated against the main wall


of the production floor is the compa- ny’s “smart bar.” The bar is a half ring of eight computerized stations, from behind which two company represen- tatives will be able to control all four


production lines digitally. This allows visitors real-time access to production data, face-to-face conversation with knowledgeable company reps, and the ability to turn around and get as close as they would like to the actual ma- chines. The bar will show customers the full process, from raw material registration to kitting and feeder set up, and on to production. “We are literally putting our


money where our mouth is,” says Jon- ny Nichols, Hanwha’s North Ameri- can director of sales and marketing. “Come see us and let us show you.”

The company has partnerships


with PEMTRON, ESE and Total Sol- dering Machinery (TSM) for inspec- tion, printing and reflow, respectively. PEMTRON’s 3D AOI and SPI sys- tems are included in Hanwha’s pro- duction lines, along with ESE’s screen printers. TSM will provide reflow sol- dering for the center. Hanwha is also the exclusive


North American distributor for ESE. The two companies have formed a unique partnership, born out of com- plementary technology and a shared desire to expand into the North Amer- ican market. Beyond the production floor,
