TechWaTch Energy Prices Are Rising: Here’s How Engineers Should Respond By Lee O’Toole, Marketing Manager, Anders
es. Once plentiful fossil fuels are becoming scarce and basic sup- ply and demand dynamics are raising prices. Concern about the environment is drawing govern- mental attention. In addition, current political events are driv- ing up oil and gas prices, as well as after effects from the pandem- ic, which include massive in- creases in the cost of shipping.
T
Low-Power Design There is no doubt that we
need to manage energy much more carefully than we have in the past. The quantity of energy that enterprises consume to cre- ate products and deliver services will play an increasing factor in their overall costs, translating into increased prices for cus- tomers, changing buyer behav- ior, and competition in the mar- ketplace. For individuals, rising
he global energy supply is being squeezed by both natural and political caus-
domestic utility bills and travel- ing costs may demand savings, such as lower spending on hob- bies, activities, or food. Businesses in the high-tech
sector can expect more scrutiny from supply-chain partners and end users about a range of sub- jects, from business policies and carbon status to the operating ef- ficiency and power consumption of the products they place on the market. For us as engineers, we can
view these pressures as opportu- nities to apply our intellect and training to create effective solu- tions. This is the defining chal- lenge of our time: whereas previ- ous generations of scientists and engineers have created new tech- nologies and products that have vastly improved the quality of our lives, we must now engineer for sustainability, to consolidate those gains while consuming less energy and avoiding waste. If we think afresh about every block in

the diagram, we can aggregate many small gains that sum to a large overall improvement.
Even More Efficient Anders is increasingly find-
ing that customers want to take existing systems designs and reengineer them to deliver similar or better performance, using less power. There are many ways to achieve this, including replacing components with the latest-gener- ation equivalents, redesigning embedded software for more fru- gal power management, or maybe rethinking the overall look and feel to swap a power-hungry graphical display with a lower- power e-ink solution: monochrome is cool in more ways than one. On the other hand, introduc-
ing extra intelligence like proxim- ity sensing — through a combina- tion of extra sensors and associat- ed firmware tuning — can reduce the overall power consumed by equipment like industrial control panels or digital signage. Ensur- ing they only spring into life when somebody approaches allows them to spend more time in re- duced-power modes when they are not being used.
Design Opportunities With so much focus on ener-
gy, everywhere, there are nu- merous opportunities for engi-
Immersion silver has proven to be an excellent choice for 5G for its low impact on insertion loss. 5G’s mobility demands properties and stability in a wide range of environments. Technic’s TechniPad IS 7070 meets these challenges with

neers to save it in their designs: like using backlight timers to re- duce dwell time (like a smart- phone); smarter processors not only allow many more reduced- power operating modes than their predecessors, but also now feature hardware accelerators that accomplish functions like cryptography more quickly and efficiently. Others are introduc- ing AI, such as neural networks or decision trees, to handle work- loads like facial or activity recog- nition extremely efficiently. Also, combined with en-
hanced thermal engineering, these ultra-low-power processors can allow fanless operation that not only saves power, but also re- duces audible noise and en- hances reliability. Hence the re- sulting system is not only green- er, but also more pleasant to use and longer lasting. There are practically infi-
nite opportunities to trim power from any system. It’s about find- ing ways to improve wherever we look. And then having the ex- pertise to optimize each part of the design and ultimately to de-
liver the result. Contact: Anders Electronics
