Choosing a Parylene Coating Provider

By David Pribish, General Manager, Para-Coat Technologies, Inc. A

dding conformal coating is usually a key component to a finished product. However, the application of conformal coating is an af-

terthought and usually the last step in the process. This thought process can lead to long delays and line-down situations which is why choosing the proper coating provider should be a priority for companies. Taking the time to research and choose a

provider before the project begins will limit many of the headaches that can arise at the end of the project when time is of the essence. There are a variety of things to

consider when choosing a Parylene coating provider. Significant factors to take into consideration before making a final decision include:

Full-Service Coating Provider. Even if you are searching for a Pary- lene coating provider, it is important to seek out a company that offers a full range of coating options. This gives more flexibility if products are changing coating to or from Parylene or if a customer requests a new prod- uct with a unique coating.

Convenient Location. Parylene providers are more prevalent than in the past but it is still a relatively niche market. Having a provider that is conveniently located near a well- connected road and air network is critical. This will allow for earlier de- livery and pickup hours which lead to faster transit times.

Quality. Quality can be subjective based on customers’ demands and needs. Look for a provider that fol- lows a standard but will adjust to what you are looking for. You may re- quire a different coating thickness than the standard provider applies. Your inspection criteria may be more or less stringent than the norm. Once again communication is key. Ensure you are on the same page as the provider so that the finished product is what you both expect it should be. Seek out a Parylene provider

that has some of the following certifi- cations or registrations. This shows that the provider has checks and bal- ances in place to maintain reliability and consistency. These include: ISO 9001:2015 certification; IPC Class 3 standard; IPC-A-610 certified inspec- tors; IPC-CC-830/830/B certified coatings; biomedical certification, Class VI certified implantable Pary- lene; cleanroom capabilities IPC 8 or lower; and ITAR registration. Whether or not these certifica-

tions are required for the current project, having them ensures that the coating provider can grow with the needs of your company or any new customers that may come arise.

Price. Generally speaking, cus- tomers always expect to pay much less than what a product actually costs to apply the Parylene coating. Some things to consider when evalu-
