Ryder Industries Celebrates 40 Years of Electronics Manufacturing
Walkman, Voyager 1 had just started sending back images of Jupiter’s rings and Ryder Industries was founded by entrepreneur Eric Winkler to design and build electronics. Today, the Walkman is a quaint tech antique, Voyager 1 has traveled farther than any other spacecraft and Ryder is still dedicated to electronics design and manufacturing excellence.

Opportunities in the East From the beginning, the compa-
ny was unique. Winkler, of Swiss na- tionality, was focused on precision and quality, but recognized the op- portunity for excellence and scale in China. At the time, it was tradition that anyone investing in China must enter into a joint venture with a Chi- nese partner, however, Winkler was able to transact one of China’s earli- est wholly foreign-owned investment enterprises. Ryder got its start in 1979 by
designing and building chess com- puters. The company later diversified into designing and building other in- telligent games and personal elec- tronics. In 1987, an extension into marketing and distribution services triggered a name change to the more market-friendly Saitek.
