High Sensitivity Dynamic Light Scattering System helps Users Meet New Zeta Potential Measurement Standard for Biologics
One of the most significant applications for Malvern Instruments’ new Zetasizer Nano ZSP dynamic light scattering system is the highly sensitive measurement of the zeta potential, or electrophoretic mobility, of proteins. The instrument delivers unique performance specifications for both size and zeta potential measurement, employing an approach to zeta potential measurement that accords with the latest industry guidance. Published during 2012, standard guide ASTM E2865 deals with the measurement of mobility and zeta potential in systems containing biological material such as proteins, DNA, liposomes and other similar organic materials that possess particle sizes in the nanometer scale, below 100nm. These materials are often labile, especially when subjected to an electric field, and standard electrophoretic techniques can lead to measurement of the resulting aggregates rather than the native material.
It has been shown that much of the aggregation takes place at the electrodes. In the Zetasizer Nano ZSP, use of Malvern’s patented Diffusion Barrier Technique protects the sample by isolating it from the electrode, as recommended in the ASTM standard. Consequently the applied voltage can be switched on for longer periods to generate more reliable measurement data. The method involves the use of a unique, disposable folded capillary cell which allows measurements to be conducted on samples as small as 20 microlitres.
The measurement process is simplified by the inclusion of a protein mobility measurement type in the instrument software that controls data acquisition, guides the user through the measurement and assesses and reports on data quality. Bronkhorst Cori-Tech BV released a new model in its series of compact Coriolis Mass Flow Meters/Controllers for accurate measurement and control of (very) low flow rates. With the introduction of mini CORI-FLOW™ model M15, the maximum flow range of this product line is extended from 0-30 kg/h to 0-300 kg/h.
The instruments are suitable for both liquid and gas flow applications. The unique design of the miniature Coriolis sensor features superior response time and high accuracy, irrespective of changing operating conditions with regard to pressure, temperature, density, conductivity and viscosity.
The effective turndown is no less than 1500:1, with easy, on-site possibility for the user to re-range the instrument to his requirements, thus guaranteeing highest process flexibility.
The instruments have a robust IP65 weatherproof housing and are designed to withstand an operating pressure of up to 100 bar.
Mini CORI-FLOW™ offers integrated PID control and close-coupled control valves or pumps, thus constituting very compact Coriolis mass flow control loops.
Mini CORI-FLOW™ features state-of-the-art digital technology, offering standard analogue and RS232 communication, optional fieldbus interfaces and additional functions such as alarms, totaliser (to measure fluid consumption) and batch dosing. The instruments feature fluid temperature and density as secondary digital outputs.
Typical applications include gas or liquid flow measurement in research laboratories and pilot plants, process fluid monitoring or control systems in (petro-) chemical, pharmaceutical and food & beverage industries as well as liquid dosing systems in a wide variety of markets.
