Oxford Instruments’ Customers win IEEE Van Duzer Prize
paper entitled "Optical Response of a Cold-Electron Bolometer Array Integrated in a 345-GHz Cross-Slot Antenna". In this article, the research mentioned used a Helium-3 refrigerator to measure the optical response of a Cold-Electron-Bolometer array at 300µK. Electron cooling was measured at 100 µK using a dilution refrigerator.
Professor Kuzmin wins the 2011 IEEE Van Duzer prize
Professor Leonid Kuzmin and co-authors from the Department of Microtechnology and NanoScience at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden have won the 2011 IEEE Van Duzer prize for the best contributed paper published in IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity.
Oxford Instruments Nanoscience has a long history of collaboration with Professor Leonid Kuzmin, having supplied systems to support his research on Cold Electron Bolometers (CEB).
Professor Kuzmin and co-workers have won the prize for their
Leonid Kuzmin said: “Oxford Instruments equipment was key to this research as we needed a low temperature environment with a very high temperature stability and low-noise operation. We managed to measure optical response with noise equivalent power down to 2*10-17 W/Hz1/2 and electrical NEP=6*10-18 W/Hz1/2. The fluctuation sensitivity to radiation temperature down to 1.3*10-4 K/Hz1/2 was possible to measure due to very high stability of both Oxford Instruments’ cryostats, Heliox and Triton.”
“Using our array of superconductor-insulator-normal metal (SIN) tunnel junctions we have been able to measure a temperature stability below ±250 µK over a period of 8 hours with a temperature resolution of ±100 µK,” he added.
Professor Kuzmin has received a Government Megagrant to set- up a modern Laboratory of Cryogenic Nanoelectronics in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. He is also planning to set-up a Research centre in the new Government Center of Research and Education Skolkovo prolonging its extensive collaboration with Oxford Instruments.

BioTek Sponsored LMU-Munich Team placed 4th in iGEM Competition Congratulations to the LMU-Munich iGEM team for a job well done!
BioTek Instruments recently supported the Ludwig-Maximillians- University (LMU) Munich team as a Gold Sponsor for their participation in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2012 World Championship competition. As part of the sponsorship, BioTek loaned the LMU-Munich team a Synergy™ 2 Multi-Mode Microplate Reader for use in their research project, called Beadzillus.
The goal of Beadzillus is to introduce Bacillus subtilis as a suitable organism for BioBrick-based synthetic biology using spores displaying fusion proteins. Their extensive research led the LMU-Munich team to a fourth place finish among 190 competing global teams.
BioTek Germany, European Coordination Center, was recently awarded certification in accordance with EN ISO 13485:2003. This certification confirms that administration, sales and distribution, warehouse management, service/repair, and installation at the subsidiary all fulfill the quality management system requirements for medical devices as set out in this standard.
BioTek's manufacturing facility and headquarters in Winooski, Vermont is similarly certified in accordance with EN ISO 13485.

Lab managers of food laboratories face new and unique challenges with increasing testing volume, information management and new regulatory compliance demands due to increased sourcing of foreign suppliers, customer requirements and new food safety regulations. Up until now, there has not been a conference focused on running, managing and equipping a food lab.
The Food Labs Conference will not be focused on just one discipline such as microbiology or chemistry but takes a more holistic approach to best practices in managing food testing and analyses needs. Food Safety Tech and The Pittsburgh
Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (Pittcon) have formed a strategic partnership, which will include the co-location of Food Labs Conference in conjunction with Pittcon 2013, which will be held in Philadelphia, 17th-21st March 2013, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
The agreement provides that the registration fee to attend the two-day Food Lab Conference, 19th-20th March, will also include unlimited week-long admission to the Pittcon exposition floor and technical program.

The programme included a 'Thin Films' meeting led by Hayley Brown of Plasma Quest and the University of Surrey. It focused on metal oxides and optical thin films.
Vacuum Expo 2012, recently held in Coventry proved a big draw for both European and international visitors and also attracted 12 new exhibitors according to organisers Xmark Media. Reports from the show floor indicated increased visitor numbers, who were mainly there to do business. Many exhibitors also said they had an excellent event with increased prospect numbers and plenty of high quality discussions taking place on their stands. Post show analysis has confirmed the visitor growth to be 30%.
The one-day ‘Vacuum and Plasmas for Industry’ meeting drew a sizable audience. Niall Macgearailt from Intel, Ireland, opened the meeting with a talk on the "Plasma Process Control in the Semiconductor Industry". He described the challenges of volume production world-wide and keeping control of the plasma processes to keep the yield high and the production line moving. Niall commented after the meeting: "The combination of the Vacuum Expo and technical sessions provide an excellent networking opportunity. The large number of UK and European based suppliers offering innovative products and solutions are extremely encouraging."
More details about Vacuum Expo can be viewed at
www.vacuum-expo.com. Dates for next year's show will be 16th -17th October 2013, at Ricoh Arena Coventry.
