Carrigtwohill Sports and Community Awards

by RORY O’ TOOLE Continued from front page

Carrigtwohill Sports and Community Awards Photos by Rory O’Toole Last Saturday night was presentation of the

the 33rd

Carrigtwohill Sports and Community Awards. The May Award was presented to Carrigtwohill United Under 18 Youth Team - a team that has enjoyed a very successful season. Opening very well saw them get to the semi-final stage of the League Cup. Getting to the semi-final itself was a great achieve- ment, and this spurred the team on to another good cup run which saw them reach the last 16 of the FAI Youth Cup, only to be defeated by Kilfrush from Limerick on a scoreline of 2-1. The team also had 3 representatives on the

Cork Youth Academy. A league title was al-

ways the overall aim for this group but, against the likes of Macroom, Leeds, Crosshavan, Springfield, Bandon, and Corkbeg it wasn’t going to be easy. After some good results home and away, a 2-1 win in the local derby against Corkbeg, and a 3-1 win away to Bandon, meant that

seal the league.

first ever silverware in the Youth League. The season finished with a 2-2 draw against Springfield. The team finished on 28 points, 9 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw, scoring 38 goals and con- ceding only 18 in a very tight league. For this group it was just rewards for the effort

and commitment

another win would Corkbeg

were next and because of results in other games, and the win against Bandon, they knew a win would seal the title. During a nervy opening 45 minutes both teams had chances, and the Corkbeg keeper made a number of important saves to keep them in the game. The second half was a different game complete- ly, scoring 3 goals sealed the victory and the club’s

of years togeth-

er. Congratulations to the team, their Manager John O’ Sullivan and his fellow selectors. The June Award has two

recipients, both of whom totally deserve this Award for

their achievements

throughout the season, the first June Award goes to the Sciath na Scoil Camo- gie winning team of Scoil Chlochair Mhuire (Car- rigtwohill Girls National School).

as a group of enthusias- tic and energetic

Described by their coach players

who would give their all in every match and train- ing session, this proved to be the situation for their following matches where determination showed through to reach the final of Sciath na Scol in Páirc Uí Rinn. Giving their all once more was required to achieve what they orig- inally set out to do - come home with the Sciath na Scoil Cup and this they did by winning the final in some style. Described by one of the teachers “This is a fantastic achievement and we hope the players all continue to play with such passion and enthusiasm and there is no doubt they will reach further heights in their playing careers in the future!”

The second June Award

goes to Sciath na Scol Hurling Winning Team of Scoil Mhuire

Naofa,

Carrigtwohill Boys Natio- anl School, a team whose school makes a habit of winning. Early this year,

they won the Grade

Premier Sciath na Scol

Chorcaí Indoor Hurling at Na Piarsaigh Hall. It was a fantastic achievement to win the top grade of this competition, which caters for 4th

class. This achieve-

ment was followed by further success in the Mi- ni-Sevens Hurling Tour- nament where the school again took the spoils, with wins against St. Anthony’s, St. Patrick’s, Glounthaune and Ballinadee in the final. Next up the big one Sci-

ath na Scol, three wins out of four in the preliminary rounds meant

the defeated a team

qualified for the Sciath na Scol semi-final, in which they

fancied

St. Columba’s of Doug- las. The biggest day of all was when the team played in the Sciath na Scol final in Páirc Uí Rinn against Ballyvolane. A great per- formance throughout the team saw them win the fi- nal in convincing fashion, on a scoreline of 3-9 to 3-0. Credit to team coach- es and parents for support during the year
