Cork County

Council Approves New Sports Complex for Midleton

by SEAMUS WHELEHAN

On any given Saturday,

Coleman Quirke said, the fields at Clonmult Memori- al Park are packed. “We are bursting at the

seams and have been for a long time” said Mr Quirk, PRO of Midleton GAA. “So packed, in fact, that

the club is struggling to meet the demand for new members”. It is estimated that one

in twelve people in Mid- leton (current population 12,000) call Clonmult Me- morial Park their home and, with the population of Midleton predicted to

hit 20,000 over the next five years, it is expected that de- mand for space at the Club will grow. The

Central Statistics

office predict that by 2045 Ireland’s population will grow to 6 million and Cork County will have to meet their share of demand. According to planning

experts the Cork–Midleton rail corridor is expected to see the majority demand for housing. In order to meet the de-

mand for recreational facil- ities, Cork County Council have approved planning for a new GAA sports complex near Midleton.
