A BUSY WEEK! Golf Classic is done, so
it was back in full swing this week with matches almost every night of the week and the not insignif- icant matter of our Cúl Camp (full

week), while our Healthy Clubs Project took mighty strides uphill (literally) to the
down Mountain. For a welcome change, football took centre stage this week, with exciting games in jun- ior and minor football on Monday 16th 22nd
and Sunday nicely bookending
the week, while our U15s had a facile win over St. Catherine’s in their cham- pionship on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, no sign of rain, and our sym- pathy for farmers and those working the land is multiplied every time we see the sorry state of our own parched pitches. S/ he who coined the beau- tiful maxim “virtus stat in medio” (virtue in modera- tion) didn’t manage to suf- ficiently influence the Irish weather gods of 2018!
JUNIOR
FOOTBALL Glenville 3-13 Glenbower Rovers
3-8 Our Junior footballers
played their final league game in Division 1 of the East Cork League on Monday evening last. Our first half performance was a little sluggish as we took time to re-acclima- tise to the ‘big ball’ but once we got moving with Sean Long’s point on 21 minutes (Glenville
had
kicked 1-6 by this point), our young team grew in confidence. Half-time was 0-3 to 2-6, but a brilliant second half performance saw us reduce the gap to 52 minutes (3-9 to 3-6), with Sean Long, Ciaran O’Brien and Kieran Lane leading the charge. Glen- ville closed out the game with the final points but this was a performance that showed the potential

and Shamrocks (Rin-
gaskiddy) GAA Clubs, and they played excellent football throughout. One of the positives from this game was the return from injury for two of our stal- warts Owen Cosgrove and Robert Sinclair, with both doing very well in their first game in many weeks. The first half hummed away nicely but the score conversion rate was poor from both sides (particu- larly ours) and it finished level, 1-4 to 0-7 at referee Jim Daly’s half-time whis- tle. Ciaran O’Rourke had scored our goal on five minutes, and the second quarter was the ‘let’s try not to score’ quarter as despite both teams play- ing exciting football, only one point was added by each side. The second half was a non-stop score-fest, starting with our visitors getting in for an early goal just after half-time as they worked a turnover

their own ’45 all the way to the other end with a great finish for a green flag. Our teamwork then paid divi- dends of its own as Cathal Fitzgibbon started a move on his own ’45 and three long passes later via Cath- al, Dara Motherway and Adrian Galvin saw Cathal bearing down on goal at speed and he finished bril- liantly to the net. Ciaran Leahy, who had played well in the first half with- out converting, then took centre stage with 1-1 in a three minute spell mid way through the half. This left us three ahead, 3-6 to 1-9 and we thought we had worn down our opponents. How wrong we were, as they continued to attack at pace from any turnovers and kicked some excel- lent scores, with goals on 45 and 59 minutes giving them a strong lead – 3-14 to 4-7, (David Collins had blasted his own 1-1 around the 50 minute mark) as we reached closing time. David’s second point was followed by Robert Sin- clair’s in injury time but it seemed like it might not be enough. However, in added-time drama (justi- fied time given the stop- pages and substitutions), Adrian Galvin poked the

we headed along the top of the ridge to the spectacular viewpoint from atop the 794m high Knockmeal- down Mountain. From here we had views for miles, including Dungar- van Bay, the meandering Blackwater and Youghal Bay including Capel Is- land, and even Ballycotton Bay. From here, the only way was down, and down we came across the burnt heather and back to where we started, four hours lat- er, parched, tired and a little sunburnt, but exhil- arated after such an epic mountain trek. Well done to all 21 walkers and a spe- cial thank you to our guide for the day, Teresa Barry, who brought us all safe- ly to where we wanted to go, and safely down again. Our next walk is Monthly Walk No. 31 and it will be in Ballyhoura, Co. Limer- ick on Sunday August 12th at 10.00 a.m. There are many different walks in Ballyhoura so something for everyone. After that we head to Killarney on Sun- day September 9th
for Torc
Mountain Walk, another spectacular challenge.
