now two Parishes without a res- ident priest. Both Cill Na Mar- tra Parish and Aghinagh Parish are now serviced by the three priests in the Parish of Mac- room. With the decline in the numbers of priests it also means that a reduction in the number of Masses that a Parish can have both on Sundays and weekdays. The Priests of the Diocese have been reflecting on these issues in recent times and how to respond to the changing situation.

Diocese of Cloyne Announces Winner of the Sacred Music Competition
The Diocese of Cloyne has announced Irish composer, Mr Bernard Sexton, as the winner of the Sacred Music compe- tition for a Setting of the Mass.
The Sacred Music Com- petition was launched last
year prior to the Cente- nary of the consecration of St. Colman’s Cathe- dral, which will be cele- brated in August 2019. For the occasion, the Di- ocese
the Dublin Choral Foun- dation and Mr. Andrew Reid of The Royal School of Church Music.
Most
of Cloyne called upon Irish composers to compose a “Mass of St Colman 2018”. The competition was judged by Dr. John O Keeffe, Di- rector of Choral Groups, Maynooth University, Dr. Ite O’Donovan of
Rev William Crean, Bish- op of Cloyne, presented €5,000 to Mr Sexton for his works.
At the announcement,
Most Rev William Crean, Bishop of Cloyne, said; “This Mass setting will be one of the many ways of uniting all parishes with
the
of the diocese. It is an- ticipated that
setting will be used for appropriate
Cathedral church this Mass ceremonies
in parishes in 2019 lead- ing up to the centenary celebrations. Parishes will have the opportunity to become familiar with the Mass setting through
a
programme of meetings, workshops and choir days.”
Commenting on the win- ning entry Dr. O’Keeffe said “This was the setting that
most comprehen-
sively fulfilled the brief. Strongly melodic with a solid harmonic underpin- ning and imaginatively festive with plenty of ac- companimental and tex- tural variety. It is recog- nisably Irish, displaying a good sense of the require- ments of liturgy and the realities of congregation-
al participation. We can imagine a range of dioce- san congregations singing this Mass”.
The first major perfor- mance of
the “Mass of
St Colman 2018” will be in August 2019 to coin- cide with the centenary of the consecration of the Cathedral and reded- ication of the restored pipe organ. Towards the end of 2015, the Telford
& Telford organ in the Cathedral of Cobh was dismantled and sent
to
the Ruffatti workshops in Padua for restoration. The restored pipe organ will be rededicated at the centenary Mass in August 2019.
important lesson about
remaining connected to Jesus if we are to be his followers. It is unfortu- nate for them that
their
break is interrupted. The crowd are thirsty for more and suffering from a lack of real leadership. Je- sus has so much compas-
sion for the people that the phrase Mark uses ac- tually means he felt com- passion in his intestines! A biblical way of saying he felt compassion for them in the pit of his stomach. Next month we greet
the shepherd of the Catholic Church as Pope
Francis comes to Ireland for the World Meeting of Families. It will be a mo- mentous occasion, a once in a life-time experience to see and to hear from a Pope who has so much to say to us about sharing the gospel message in our world. He calls us to be
joyful Christians, to reach out to the poor and aban- doned, to be disciples in our families, communi- ties, on the streets and to help build a world that is true to Christ’s vision for this world. Pope Francis is a leader who inspires many. Whether you are
travelling to the festival or watching it at home we pray for the success of this extraordinary event. Let us pray today for leaders in our Church and in our communities, that
they
will inspire people, nur- ture
