Limerick up next for Cork in All Ireland Semi-Final Sunday July 29th
in Croke Park on July 29th after
Cork will face Limerick the Treaty men got
the better of Kilkenny in a cracking quarter final contest in Semple Stadi- um Thurles. Limerick who drew with Cork in the third round in Munster will be hell bent on revenge as in that particular game Lim- erick were reduced to 14 after Aaron Gillane was sent off for striking Sean O’Donoghue. The score on that oc- casion was Cork 1-25 and Limerick 0-28 and in the win over Kilkenny,
Lim-
erick also posted another huge tally 0-27 to 1-22 so they will certainly pose a serious threat
to Cork on
Sunday. Limerick failed to score a goal but created several chances with Kilk- enny keeper Eoin Murphy who already assured of an All Star saving four clear cut
chances, so Limerick
will certainly be a worthy opponent for Cork in the semi-Final. All three
teams who
qualified from the Mun- ster championship are still involved with Clare getting the better of Wexford in Pairc Ui Chaoimh to set up a meeting with All Ireland champions Galway, which takes place on Saturday as no team from Leinster are still involved. It will seem a bit like
groundhog day for Cork who defeated Waterford twice last season, but the Deise overcame them in
the semi-final. It is now the turn of limerick to see if they can do the same, so Cork have been in this posi- tion before and must learn from the
experience not as
Limerick will certainly fan- cy their chances of coming out on top. Cark have
played
since their Munster Final victory over Clare, and they have had a few weeks to hone their skills for what will be a tough contest. The speed of the Cork at- tack could be their greatest asset in Croke Park, but that speed must be com- plemented by accuracy if Cork are to rack up enough scores to win. Should Cork get in for a goal or two it would make life a lot easier, on the other hand should Limerick convert some of the chances they are mak- ing, then Cork could be in trouble. Cork this year have built of their displays of last season and are now playing a much more assured brand of hurling, taking their time to take their scores and not rush their shots. For Cork to win however all six for- wards will need to score as up to now Patrick Horgan, Seamus
Harnedy, Shane
Kingston and Conor Le- hane have done the bulk of the scoring. In defence too Cork will
need to be very sharp as this Limerick side are well capable
plenty of problems, as they are physically strong, very mobile and are
growing of causing Cork
in Croke Park at 3.30pm they are
in confidence with each match. They also have the Na Piarsigh players back on board, so they have strength in depth, something that I am not too sure that Cork has in abundance. Both sides are likely to unchanged teams
name
with perhaps one or two positional switches in attack especial- ly. I expect that Anthony Nash will line out in goal, fronted by S e a n O’Donoghue, Damien Ca- lahane and Colm Spillane who could start at full back. Outside them Christopher Joyce, Eoin Cadogan and Mark Coleman all look set
to start, with Darragh
Fitzgibbon and Bill Coop- er once again teaming up at midfield. The attack will most likely comprise Shane Kingston, Conor Lehane and Daniel Kearney in the half forward line, while the inside trio of Patrick Hor- gan, team captain Seamus Harney and Luke Meade will complete but
switch during
these six may well the
the attack, game
as the need arises. On the bench Michael Calahane, Robbie
O’Flynn, Dean
Brosnan, Brian Lawton, Jack O’Connor and Lor- cain McLoughlin will all be ready if called upon. Limerick too should
make a minimal amount of changes with Nicky Quaid manning the goal. In front of him Sean Finn, Mike Casey and Richie English
are a no nonsense trio who may lack for pace but
all
solid defenders. The half back trio of Di- ar m uid Byrnes, team ca p - t a in
de cl a n Hannon
and Dan Morris- sey have been in superb form this season. At
mid-
field Darragh O’Dono- van and Cian Lynch have struck up a good partner- ship, while in attack, Gea- roid Hegarty, Kyle Hayes and tom Morrissey are all huge men. The inside trio of Aaron Gillane, Seamus Flanagan and Graham Mulcahy are all speed mer- chants, while on the bench players
such as Shane
Dowling, Peter Casey and William O’Donoghue are all capable of making an impact from the bench. It promises to be a crack-
ing encounter, which Cork will need to be at their very best
to win. A good start
and clinical finishing will be required from John Myler’s side, as John Kiley’s Limer- ick have shown that they are in the semi-final on merit and having drawn with Cork when they were re- duced to 14 players in Pairc
• Colm Spillane Cork and Cian Lynch Limerick during the 2018 Munster Senior Hurling championship Round 3 game at Pairc Ui Chaoimh
Ui Chaoimh, they will not fear facing them in Croke Park. Playing at HQ could be an advantage to Cork, while their speed in attack will be another asset if they can use it. Limerick will feel that they can get goals and if they do Cork could be in
EC U21 AHC Carrigtwohill v Watergrasshill
Carrigtwohill 4-20 Watergrasshill 4-10
by DEREK KIELY DEFINITELY One of
the best games of hurling seen for a while as Car- rigtwohill booked their place in the semi-final of the East Cork U21 AHC with a brilliant comeback win over Watergrasshill in Lisgoold on Tuesday night. What an incredible first
half for Watergrasshill who started off with a goal from Shane O’Regan on the first minute which
sparked off a ten minute spell of
total domination
that included a further point from O’Regan, then the wing forward blasted in his second goal on the ninth minute after Chris Healy pointed twice and then a point from play from Sean Desmond left the ‘Hill’ ten points clear. It took Carrigtwohilll
twelve minutes to raise a white flag through Liam Gosnell with a free, but immediately O’Regan re-
sponded in kind. Carrig fought back with a point from Oliver Bav- erstock and another free from Gosnell, but the ‘Hill’ had their third green flag on the seventeenth minute when Kyle Cronin finished of brilliantly. Then Carrigtwohill got going and a Luke Kelly goal and three points from Gosnell without response made it a bit more inter- esting, but it wasn’t long before Watergrasshill were back again with a brace from O’Regan and anoth- er goal from Cronin, but Gosnell pointed twice to leave eight between sides at the break.
The Carrigtwohill half
time team talk was intense and it worked. Immediate- ly Carrig were winning ball all over the pitch and were ahead within nine minutes with a Paul O’Hanlon goal and seven scores without reply. Watergrasshill were shell shocked and after an ex- change of points between the sides, Carrigtwohill had their third goal when Baverstock reacted quick- est when the ball came back off
pounced and swept
the crossbar he the
ball home. The ‘Hill’ could only
muster up one more point, whereas

for an uncomfortable Sun- day afternoon. John Myler will have planned well and if Cork can show a bit more improvement then they will be in the final. Clare will have met Gal-
way on Saturday night, but anything other than a
Galway victory would be a huge surprise, still in sport anything cannot be ruled out so barring a draw we will know the 2018 All Ire- land finalists after the week- end games.
